Hiya Folks,

How can I modify the quote thing to include the quotees name? Also, maybe something like..... ~example~

Joshpet said: Hey Storm!......etc.....

And have that boxed in like normal. This would be much nicer than it just saying Quote because if it's from an old post folks won't have a clue as to who they were responding.

That'll be tougher than you think.

It'll be weird if you store it in the post.... and to try to link it creates the same trouble that Rick had when he had to abandon the "Re: username" in flat mode.

It requires a second JOIN.

Probably could be done if you stored it in the post. But then it would be confusing if someone changed their display name.

Well the username used to be stored in the post.

So you wrote "Posted by JoshPet:" into the new posts quote block.

But now..... when I change my name, it makes no sense.

You you'd have to store the number of the person you are replying to. Re: User# 2015, then do other queries to have it look up the current display name of user 2015.

I don't understand it completely. But rick says it requires a second JOIN.

If the Re: Username issue gets worked out... then the name in the autoquote would be easy. But currently, storing the name would make it extra confusing if they changed their name.

Or.. to take a step backwards.. put the old B_Username field back in and make addpost store the poster's display name at the time of posting. Then pull the name back out when displaying the posts and use it for quoting or whatnot.

This won't be consistant since users can change their display names so it will confuse people.

That second JOIN on the database to capture display name information on the flye may have some significant drawbacks as far as forum speed goes. Perhaps a clean efficient way to do this will be figured out at a later time.

I think I'll choose the "later time" choice.......hehe The users have already been raving about being able to change their display names?? Too funny.......hehe
