My host (i´m on a shared server) says I can change the settings in my.cnf by my self

I need to increase the max_connections value, because I get a lot of "too many users errors".

But how do I edit my.cnf? Where do I find it? Do I use telnet? How do I upload my own my.cnf and what should I put in it?

I´ve been searching through the mysql site, but I need something easier (like a my.cnf for dummies ) to understand. I´m all but a mysql-pro.

Use the following command from telnet to find out where my.cnf is:

mysql --help

To see the current setting for max_connections:

mysqladmin variables

I'm not sure about how to set max_connections. If I had to guess, I'd say add the following line to my.cnf, where XXX is the number of connections:

max_connections = XXX

After changing it, I assume you'd have to restart the MySQL daemon. This is how I do that:

mysqladmin -p shutdown
cd /usr/lib/mysql
safe_mysqld --log &
