it takes me somewhere inside of that thread - even if I have never looked at it before.
If I click on a thread with alot of replies, I dont see the first page with the headers at the top, I'm scrolled somewhere into the thread and down towards the bottom!

If you've looked at postlist before... it typically marks the post read.... even if you've never looked at the individual thread. Is this a new post, or one that you maybe just didn't look at before? Postlist marks the stuff read..... but the system isn't quite perfect yet.

It actually pretty annoying because I'll click on a thread I've never read and it throws me somewhere in the middle and I have to navigate to the beginning! Clicking on the main link should just take me to the first post. Clicking on the Last Post should take me to the last.

Yeah, but if you are keeping up with the thread.. then you wouldn't want to be taken to the last post... it's nice that it puts you to the first unread post.
That's the thing that drives me nuts with classic. I can only go to the beginning or to the end. Sometimes you need to pick up from the middle. I hate jumping to the end of a long thread, only to have to backup and figure out where I left off.
Perhaps threads should have a place to click to always start at the beginning of the thread. But starting where you left off is a powerful feature.

What I do is on my forums when I'm visiting I will read everything I can, then before I leave the site I hit mark all read. This way when I come back, I see just the new posts from when I last sat down and can browse new ones from the beginning. I know this doesn't work in all situations, but for the most part it gets the job done. But I will say that is my favorite feature in threads, is I rarely ever have to scroll and know exactly where I left off

I personally use the Remind Me on each post. I know that it is a bit time consuming but at least I don't loose any posts...
Warm regards

This only applies if you read all the posts on each visit. If I come back and then read a few posts I havent read before, I throws me in the middle instead of letting me see the start.
So, really, this feature is only good if you read most all threads on every visit!
