When you replied to a post, it would show who you replied to... like this from another board:

That was removed in 6.2 as 6.2 uses user numbers.... the names were no longer stored in the post table.

It would have to look up the username for each usernumber and would have been a bit complicated. That's why it was removed. If you hover over the subject of a reply (which now links to the post it replies to) the alt text will tell you the post number it's in reply to.

At the time, a good way couldn't be found to do this without adding too many queries.

JustDave (genius) made a simple mod to put this back if you want, which only uses like one or two queries.

You can find it here.

This will be coming back in the next release that has an altertable. Probably for 6.3.

Nobody forces you to upgrade.

LOL

But how can you resist.

Actually think Rick's working on bug squashing the last of the bugs in 6.2. So my guess would be that we've got a while.

Not to be a party-pooper, but what's the use of the Re: thing? I know it shows whose reply thing you clicked, but what do people use it for? Just a shortcut so you don't have to say, "Josh, that's a good idea!" but instead can say, "That's a good idea!" ?

Well, yeah... on active boards, with long threads.... you can't tell who the reply is to and people get confused.

I tend to agree with AKD96. Look at it this way. Suppose twenty people are sitting around a table having a discussion. When one of them speaks, how do you know whom he's talking to? Should a bubble magically appear above his head with the other person's name in it?

Yeah, it probably wouldn't be a necessary "add".... but since it was there to begin with.....try putting 6.2 on their site without the mod.

The PMs and Emails will fly at you from every direction. I causes them to "hate" 6.2. Not because it's "needed" but because you took something away. People want new features not less features.

That's why I wrote the original mod so quickly for Leoville. There was alot of noise about it even for the day it was gone. No matter how many times I explained to hover over the subject, it didn't help them if the post was on another page.

JustDave's mod outdid mine, as it used the array to save queries.

So to keep the troops quiet, JustDave's mod has been as standard part of all my upgrades and installs. Thus many haven't missed it.

Sometimes you gotta do little things like that because it saves you a headache.

I'm thinking Rick may do the extra table join if he's adding a nother field. I kicked this around for a bit but kept hitting a brick wall. LoL For now the extra query and array works.

For some reason, no matter how small that feature is, that was the FIRST thing most of my users noticed. They were like "Hey! It doesn't show the Re: username anymore". I had no clue what they were even talking about, but I guess some people really use it

This is true Jeremy. I had the same problem. We have people that post on a topic and then some of them post replies to each previous post. Hence if you are watching the forums in Flat mode you don't really grasp who they are replying to.

Warm regards

For an example of how useful this is.... go and read the IIP thread right now.

I just read it top to bottom.. every post. My eyes are crossed.... but I can't imagine if I couldn't easily look at see who JustDave was answering.

Yes, he could have added the name to his replies.. but users are supposed to do lots of things we tell them, and they don't always do it.

The Re: Username really helps.

I believe people want this, at least on my board, is that they find it useful when in flat mode. I dunno I don't use it personally.
