Does threads use something called a web bug to capture IP information? Is it truly a web bug if it does not transmit data to another server? I'm a bit confused and never heard this term before today. Silly me I guess but I have been asked why there is a web bug on my site and I have not put one there.

I am not aware of any "web bug" (small invisible graphic, 1px by 1px in size usually) that is used by UBB.threads.
Anyone else ever heard of this being shipped with .threads?

I don’t believe there is a web bug in threads at all. Most of you tear the files apart and rebuild them so many times it would be common knowledge if they did exist?
I’ve asked this person for directions to the web bug they say is on my site but in the mean time I am reading and learning about them.

I haven't heard of any, I'd think it'd be common knowledge if one was present by now

I now know what has happened with web bugs and my site. There are not any web bugs in threads! In the layout of my page I used spacer.gifs named after key words for the search engines. The gifs are actually 5px x 5px but this person was concerned they were web bugs. Any way it didn’t help my web ranking and maybe I should just rename them spacer.gif to aviod confusion. I never dreamed this type of question would come up but live and learn I guess. Thanks

I think you'll find that today's search engines are much more smarter than they used to be. The best way to gain rank is through the exchange of links. Find some related sites that compliment yours and see if they would like to exchange links. Meta tag keywords seem to help but sites that have been established longer that use these same keywords will be hard to compete against. If you can think of words that are just as common but not used as much by your competition you may wish to include these words in your meta tag. </2cents>

Nope, no web bugs in threads. If you have any affiliate links, however, almost all of them do (Linkshare, CJ, etc.) It's the only way for them to track your sales. (Well, I don't know that it's the ONLY way, but it's what they do. )
