how can I permanently ban someone who's IP changes. We have multiple people on at one time posting porn, etc. and can't ban them fast enough. Any suggestions?

not much you can do, unless a modification is developed to ban by mac address. we had someone wanting to do that a couple years ago, but I have no idea if she got anywhere with it.

Media Access Control (MAC) addresses change as a packet moves from one node to another on a network, so the MAC address of your Network Interface Card (NIC) never leaves your local LAN (so you cannot use it to track someone). See my Getting Connected article for an explanation of how data moves across a network.

IP addresses stay the same as a packet moves from one node to another unless a devices is using NAT. So it is possible to track someone via their IP address, but not via their MAC address.

If someone is getting dynamically assigned IP addresses then you could block the entire subnet that they are on, but you could end up blocking more than one user.

Aaron,

Are you still having trouble?

I've had luck adding the ban check to the logout script...which prevents them from being able to log out.... thus they can't reregister.

This works as long as they don't delete their cookies.... or the cookie expires.... but usually they get bored by the time that happens.

If I'm reading this thread correctly, does it mean that banning a MAC address wouldn't be possible even if a mod was available? Is there no imaginable way to ban a particular computer from accessing my site, as opposed to an IP or a user account?

Coy this says it all. MAC address's change alot more than IP so not using MAC NO
