Anyone ever try to import the users/messages from another BB after they already had an established board? I'm looking to possibly import data from a phpBB2 board into my existing site (merge the two). Of course the problem is most of the people on my current board had ids on the old board.

I'll be taking a look, but thought I would see if anyone had tried and succeeded (or failed).

I did something similar some years ago.
Importing the posts isn't that a big deal, you can simply use a high start id, so that your current posting don't get replaced.

Doing a check if the username already exists before inserting it in the database shouldn't be too hard also.

I've done a phpBB import, but it was into a new threads install. As Astaran said, the only problem would be avoiding conflicts with existing users/posts/messages.

I would do it in two "passes". On the first pass, I would print a log of conflicts (duplicate usernames, etc.). Then you could decide what to do about those, and add the conflict-resolution handling to the second pass.

I have done a manual version of the same idea...I dumped my phpBB users into MS Excel - tooled the columns around a bit...and redumped em into my UBB.Threads.

Took a while and I have nothing to show you, but it worked.
