I currently run a hacked up version of Xoops, using a threaded version of phpbb. I've currently got it hacked for subdomains. Each subdomain gets a different front news page (similar to the fron tpage on threadsdev) and they also have their own category with forums in the forums. Of course, the main domain acts as a mother site shoing all the news from the other sites and pointing to the main forum index.

Based on that description, is it feasible to get the same type of subdomain setup in ubbthreads? I'm sure it would require some development, but just want to know opinions of complexity.

One of the other features on my site is the ability to make sections of the left and right custom. In a sense you can on the site insert a code block to be executed within a block onthe site. This makes it easy for my subdomain admins to customize. Is there anything like that at all in the IIP?

Has any thought been given to allowing categories in the calendar?

You could do this with IIP but it would take some developement.

Your could assign each subdomain a link from the index pages to those respective categories like this link below

However the wise user will still know how to get to the main forum list with all forums.
