Hi,

We upgraded to 6.4 2 days ago (yeah!), and while most of the initial glitches have been worked out, we are still experiencing a problem with the posts.
For some reason posts that I read yesterday, are today showing up again as unread. Several others have complained about the same thing.

Suggestions?

Yep, post tracking is far from perfect sadly. This issue is probably the most serious bug currently in the software imo.

Hi,

On a related note I see that new posts here have a NEW graphic behind them. I had these on 6.1.1. as well, but they seem to have disappeared in 6.4. Any thoughts on how to get them back?

Are you perhaps referring to the fact that the background colour is different for new/unread posts?

If so, then that's done via your .css stylesheets.

Perhaps the old version you speak of uses different classes than the latest one does, and thus not everything is being read correctly. Perhaps they are specific to certain versions, that would be my guess.

Since I don't have an example stylesheet for such an old version, I cannot help you more on this question :-)

Perhaps someone else can.

Hi,

No was refering to the little graphic that appears behind the title (i.e. black box with orange text saying NEW). Found out what was causing it though, there's a typo in showflat.php. It said notred instead of notread. Fixed that and the graphic started appearing again.

Ah ok I see what you meant now. Glad to hear you found the reason for it not appearing.

Hi,

Well, that solved one of the problems. The other one is still there (i.e. the forum indexes do not always update).

Beta1 had a bug with the index creation for the w3t_Last table. Run the following sql command and let me know what you get back:

SHOW INDEX FROM w3t_Last

Hi,

"Run the following sql command and let me know what you get back:"

This:

Code
<br />Table	Non_unique	Key_name	Seq_in_index	Column_name	Collation	Cardinality	Sub_part	Packed	Comment<br />w3t_Last	1	Luid_ndx	1	L_Uid	A	5467 <br />

Yes, your index didn't get created properly. So, you'll need to run a couple of SQL commands. This will make it so all posts for all users are unread initially but it will behave normally after that.

DELETE FROM w3t_Last

ALTER TABLE w3t_Last DROP INDEX Luid_ndx

ALTER TABLE w3t_Last ADD PRIMARY KEY Last_index(L_Uid,L_Board)

Hi Scream,

Would this fix be applicable to 6.3.2 by any chance?

Here's my output...

Code
Table Non_unique Key_name Seq_in_index Column_name Collation Cardinality Sub_part Packed Null Index_type Comment <br />w3t_Last 1 Last_indx 1 L_Board A 34 BTREE <br />w3t_Last 1 Last_indx 2 L_Uid A 3480 BTREE <br />w3t_Last 1 userlast_ndx 1 L_Uid A 696 BTREE <br />

Actually my problem is kind of the opposite, in that unread posts will all change to read on a board (newlighttable & newdarktable classes).
It occurs relatively frequently and seems to be completely random.

Is this something I should go ahead and do as well? I'm VERY interested in solving this issue on my board.

TIA

Hi Twisty. In 6.3.2 that wouldn't apply. My question would be do you mean that while your looking at a forum unread posts will all the sudden be marked as read or do you mean that when you come back for another visit posts are marked as read even though you didn't read them on your last visit?

If it's the latter then that is just the way .threads works. New post tracking is session based per forum. So, you go into a forum that has 10 new threads. You read one of them. You close your browser and return to that forum, all 10 threads will be marked as read. It's a limitation of what we can actually track without tracking every post that you've ever read.

If it's not that and it's just all the sudden posts are marked as read while your visiting, then I would guess that something is deleting your w3t_visit cookie during your visit or setting it to blank. This is what is used during your visit to a particular forum. If this is messed with during your visit it will re-grab from the w3t_Last table which would basically make everything be marked as read in that forum.
