hi, some usability-issue: does anybody know a way of sending a user back to the page he was viewing when he was not yet logged in?
example: user is reading an article and wants to post a comment - he is not logged in, so he clicks on "login" and enters username+password - and then he is returned to the article he was reading, and is now able to post his comment.
currently it is difficult for him to find the article again
thanx in advance!

The easists thing would be to click back on the browser 2-3 times until he is at the article, and then reload the page.

that's true - but i would prefer an option to send the user back.
optionally i could think of a link "return to the original article you were viewing" javascript:history.back(-3) or something like that... but this is far from elegant...

Are you using cookies? If so, then registered users should automaticly log in once they go to your forum (unless they have their browser set to block cookies).
Cookies don't get set for unregistered users, so it might be a little difficult to keep track of where they were...

yes, we use cookies on our board. it's no problem with registered users who want to be remembered.
my intention was to help new users making comments. we used to have a little hack where the login-box would open in a new window and a reload of the original window after submission of user-id and password. but the multiple windows were a bit disturbing, users tended to get lost.

Well the user is tracked via cookies on where they are so currently until they register they are not tracked as Dalantech mentioned. There is no data to write into the table.

You'll have to implement some kind of history tracking via cookies or sessions to get this working. I use something similar for my global usermanagement system. It's based on sessions, but it's doable for cookies also.
