UBB.threads v6.4 Server - Linux ----------------- Not sure what's going on here... This morning I had received a post in regards to a member not being able to change his Avatar. He even sent me the error that was being shown to him at the time: Warning: copy(/home/smoknz28/public_html/ubbthreads/avatars/2.gif): failed to open stream: Permission denied in /home/smoknz28/public_html/ubbthreads/changebasic.php on line 232 Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /home/smoknz28/public_html/ubbthreads/changebasic.php:232) in /home/smoknz28/public_html/ubbthreads/ubbt.inc.php on line 253 Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /home/smoknz28/public_html/ubbthreads/changebasic.php:232) in /home/smoknz28/public_html/ubbthreads/ubbt.inc.php on line 306 At the time I was getting ready to head out the door for work and I told him that I'd look into it when I returned. I'm back from work and I'm trying to see what's going on so I log in and attempt to change my own Avatar. When I attempt to change my Avatar...I keep getting these errors. Anyone got some leads for me on this one....?

>> permission denied.
Looks like you need to check the ownership/permission on the avatars directory and the files inside.
The error means that threads couldn't overwrite the existing avatar.

Directory Avatars = 777 All files inside Avatars directory = 644
Mmm.....does this mean I need to change all the files inside the Avatars directory to 777 ?

Yeah, 644 isn't writable, particularly if your PHP scripts are running as 'nobody'.
They should be at least 666, but 777 won't hurt.

Mmmmm, well I wonder why all those files in the Avatar directory had changed in the first place?

Sometimes it depends on server setup... if the server is running safe mode or similar, then the scripts sometimes run as "nobody"... so they can write the files, but not change them.

It happens on my site from time to time as well (the last time it was the style sheets). I think my provider changes the server that they use for my site, and when they move the data from one computer to another the permissions change...

only chmod 777 is in some cases not the only thing to do. On my server the ownership of files that are writen by scripts from server have the owner 'wwwrun' (confixx) and this one is different from the ftp account owner. I cant change anything on this files with my ftp account and have to go to shell to do this.
For my work 644 for the Avatars fine. The server/ubbscripts itself is able to replace them very well. I see the owner problem first time after a servermove. I can connect with WinSCP an see the different owner.

Thanks everyone for the feedback on this. Seems that I changed the chmod on the files and we are back in business.
