I wanted to know if there was an easy fix to set the search defaults

right now it slows the site down because by default it wants to search all forum any date

most people don't bother to trim it back when they search so I would rather do it for them beforehand

You could put defaults in the Date Range Fields. Where it says:

Newer than <input type="text" name="newerval" size="2" class="formboxes" />

You can add: value="10" to that tag...or whatever number you want. You can add the same variable to the "Older than" directly below it to limit that field.

In the drop downs, you can change one of your option values to "selected"...ie <option value="d">Day(s)</option> - OR you could simply remove the <option value=""></option> tag...this would force the user to choose an option or leave it as "days"

You should make these changes in your search.tmpl.
