While finding strange happenings on some parts of our site, we decided to change the server password. This has now thrown out all sorts of errors with the forums with the mySql database and nobody can login to the forums to see if anything can be done. We no longer have the old password to hand to change it back to what it was, but it's saying that mysql cannot connect to the database.

We have the old password back and the forums are running again. Now we need to know how to change the cpanel password without screwing up the forums.

If I understand you correctly, you'll need to do the following (in this order)...

1) Close your forums in the forum admin panel
2) Change your database password in the forum admin panel
3) Change your database password
5) Open your forums again in the forum admin panel

Thanks for that, however I've just noticed something a little odd on our board.

I don't see edit config settings anywhere in the admin panel. I realise it should be there, but it isn't. How do we get it back?

Umm, really?!? It should be the very first link from the top.

Are you the only admin btw? If not, then maybe another admin hacked the scripts to only allow themselves access to that link. I really can't see what other reason there could be for it not appearing, as it's there for all admins by default...at least in my threads version (6.3.2)

I have noticed this with our main admin account, and with Moo's. Another admin says the same. We cannot see this feature

That's bizarre, sorry but I don't know the answer as to why it wouldn't be appearing. You really need to figure that out because it's the most important link there...

Edit theme settings

But there is another way to do it. You can manually edit config.inc.php to change your database password...
