In Classic there used to be an option in the CP but I can't find any in my new Threads panel. What's the procedure for running the site in another language & character set? Is the char set part of a language file that I can add, or is it in fact set somewhere in the CP?

OK, never mind that. Buddy just pm'ed me that I need to edit some generic.php script.
Another quick question though, how do I go about creating my own language version as opposed to downloading one (I don't want to simply edit the English one as I want that one to stay)?

Make a copy of the english directory and rename it. Then make sure to change the name of the language in the generic.php file.

Hi Josh, thanks for the info - did that last night and started translating everything myself.
I'm actually getting to love Threads, and so are my users! Wow!
