to have a hide hack where a person must reply to see the post?
or have new member have to post in a certian topic before they can see the rest of the forum?

I have seen this in Invision Board. The post is there and it is shown but the content is not shown until you reply to that post. I guess it won't be that difficult to implement. A simple check if your userid has been the posterid in a post with a main id of the original post can "print" the original post or not - hence hiding it.
