i decided to do a favor for my father-in-law and set him up with a wireless router, so he could share his cable with his desktop and laptop (which he could use wirelessly).

SO I picked up a 802.11b router and laptop card which I got a nice deal on.

The one I got him didn't have a built in print-server, so I told him, I'd swap the routers with the one I have at home (which does, and wasn't being used).

Fine.

This weekend, I took my router, and went to switch them. They are both SMC's, so I unplugged his, and plugged in mine.

Fiiiiizzzzz

I didn't look, didn't think to, but the voltage was different on the two models, which are nearly identical. His was running at 9 volts, mine at 5. So when the 9 volts when streaming through my router...all of the lights suddenly went out

Needless to say, he'll have to stick with the newer one, sans print server, and I went out to buy a new one for myself.

I picked up the new AirPortExtreme base station, and had it up and running within 10 minutes. (I have spend hours working on the other ones (linksys and smc). I wish other things in life were as easy as mac

I have heard only good things about the AirPort Extreme... doesn't look too shabby either.

Make sure it truly is fried and that there isn't a fuse or something inside that is blown.

Picture perfect penmanship here.

nav,

I did open the case up and looked around. Didn't see any fuses (but then again, I'm not an electrical engineer). Looks like its all one big circuit board with the various electronic doohickies.

I'll have to give it the old one over with the ohm-meter though.

Bookie,

So far it's nice. Was a snap to set up. Will have to test the range (although now that I live in an apt. building my range is limited based on where I can physcially go). I'd love to see if I can reach the roof deck, with or without an external antenae, or maybe try to bridge the distance with another station somehow.

Best solution to everything! It worked with Bryan Adams and Celine Dion, at any rate. (Sorry Lane and all the other 'aboot' speaking people here... hehe)
