So whats your main computer at home, do you have any more, any more in the house? I am looking for a nice new one for xmas.

My home computers:
Dell 8200 P4 1.8Ghz 512Mb 80Gb, 40Gb DVD/CDRW ATI8500 17TFT
Compaq Evo1020v 2.4Ghz 512Mb 40Gb DVD/CDRW Wireless

My main home PC, the Dell 8200 is 2 and a 1/2 years old now and I never turn it off and its just began to play up, I need to send it back to Dell for repair so thought it might be a good move to replace it.

Mind you I spend most my time lately on the couch with the compaq

As for the replacement I will buy another Dell as I think they are the best value and like to look of a dual zeon 450 should keep the egg timer at bay

Regards
Clint

Dell P4 1.8Ghz 1Gb mem 80Gb, DVD/CDRW drive laptop

although I spend most of my time on

Homemade desktop that happens to be sadly enough probally 5 years old that I keep buying new stuff for and upgrading.

P4 1.5Ghz 1Gb mem 80Gb, DVD and CDRW drives

There are two older Pentium III's up stairs and of course the whole house I networked so you can actually plug in from most rooms.

I leave my main computer on all the time. I have thought about buying a new one. However I think I will wait till the next rendition of processor comes out or super bus.

Things are getting cheap however also keep in mind on alot of the desktops they sell for 600.00 bucks with a monitor are the cheapest components known to man. I am pretty frugal with my money.

My "Main" Computer is custom built.

P4 2.66 GHz overclocked to 3.0GHz with Serial ATA drives in a RAID array with over 160 GB, Ati Radeon 9700 pro, 2 gigs of DDR ram, blah blah...

Then I have a IBM Thinkpad T23 laptop, mainly my work computer and what I use to work on the road.

Then a older dell desktop now stripped and used as our server in the apartment. PIII, lots of HD for file storage, etc.

Then we have a dell laptop, forget what model exactly since I rarely use it, but it's a P4 2.4

I also have a custom built. It's a Dual P3 800, 512 MB RAM, 400GB harddrive (320 in IDE RAID), 52X CD-ROM, 24x CD-RW burner, 6 CD-changer all in a big silver tower with black shaded glass front. Looks very nice. =] And a 22" screen.

As for other computers there are a couple of them scattered around the apartment, some of them running...

I've attached an image of the box I'm using.

I'm down to one that I use mainly now, that being a Dell.

P4 3.00GHz/800 FSB,P4
1GB RAM
20 inch Dell Flat Panel

Dual boot between Windows XP Pro and Debian Linux. Still have my iBook that I use around the house when I'm being lazy, like lying in bed coding

I've got a Dual 1.25 GHz PowerMac G4.

1 GB of Ram
and 2 - 17" flat panel monitors.

Also have the Apple PowerBook Titanium 400Mhz G3

and a Cheap Crappy Emachine T1842 so I can see how sites look on IE using a PC.

I was going to go with dual monitors for my main, but then the 20" flat panel went on sale. I must say, it's the sweetest thing I've ever looked at. Running at 1600x1200 I can have so many windows open it can make your head spin, but still very manageable

Cool. Yes, I like alot of screen real estate.

The dual monitors are a must for me..... I love having multiple browsers open and being able to compare them side by side.

Or my mod instructions open - and threads scripts open on the other screen.

I used to use the laptop with additional monitor as my primary machine. As soon as I got the desktop with only one monitor, I lasted less than a week before I needed to go get the second monitor. I'm just sooooo used to it.

Hey josh?

what did you have to do to get to use 2 monitors at the same time? Is it built on your videocard?

Yeah, Macs have built in support for multiple monitors. The Powermacs have 2 video ports. 1 Digital and 1 Analog. I'm using 2 analog monitors - so I just used an adapter to connect the second analog monitor.

Then in the control panel, under displays you can arrange them, determine which one gets the menu bar etc....

I can drag windows from one monitor to the other.

XP has the built in dual monitor support as well. If I had more desktop space I'd run a second monitor off the DVI port on my video card... alas, I don't think Santa will bring me the 17" plasma monitor I asked for

Without getting too in depth I have 3 desktops, 1 server, and a notebook.

Main Desktop (Where the magic and the gaming happens )
AMD 2000XP
512 Meg RAM
40 Gig HD
WinXP Pro

Wife's Desktop
Nearly identical to mine, slightly lower video card, and a 20 Gig HD
WinXP Pro

Test Box (AKA Scrap Heap where all my old parts go to die )
AMD 1700XP
512Meg RAM
Hmm... 10 Gig HD? No idea.
WIN98SE/WIN2K/Linux/whatever catches my fancy that day

Server (Laugh not! I've been hosting my website here for a couple years )
AMD Thunderbird 1200
Gig-o-Ram
2x40 Gig Drives running RAID
WIN2K Server

Laptop (my one and only Intel concession)
Dell Inspiron 8000
PIII 900
256 Meg RAM
20 Gig HD
WinXP Pro
Just got it back from my brother who was using it in college, till he decided to quit... again. *sigh*

With all these bad boys on, I can raise the temp in my upstairs 3-7 degrees, depending on the temp outside.

Hoping to enter the world of AMD Barton soon on my desktop... I hope!

1600x1200 is too small for me, even though I use 4 virtual screens. But having a second monitor that's not the same size as the main one just gave me problems so I scrapped it. Although it was nice to have ICQ, IRC and the playlist always visible, as well as being able to utilize the entire screen when using Indesign/Photoshop since I could put the tool boxes on the extra monitor.

I've found a 24" flat widescreen monitor which looks really sweet, if I was rich I'd definately buy one. The 22" CRT monitor fills up the entire desk. =/ But it is nice to be able to run 1600x1200 at 104 Hz.

My home computer:
Phantom Monitor
Phantom 0 GHz CPU
Phantom Video Card
Phantom 0 Gig RAM
Phantom Sound Card
Phantom Case
Phantom OS

I used to have a 486 DX 4 75 MHz that I scrapped when I moved half way across the country a little over a year ago. Hopefully I will get a decent cheap machine in the next 6 months.

Sun Sparc 20 rocks

Now, if I can find my null modem cable again I'll be able to log in and use it.

Well since I install Dual Flatpannels for a top Financial Info Company for a living.. Two monitora have been supported all the way back to Win95 using Appian Cards like the J2N.. I actually have installed some Quad based systems using the Matrox MMS.. You can get dual card as cheep as the ATI All-In-wonders.. You can also put dual video cards in the same PC... if you want to do Dual Monitors I would recommend the Matrox G550 or the MSI 5600 with dual Video outputs.. I have the MSI now and it has 256 Ram on it also..
