Note: if you're gonna d/l ActivePerl, you also need MSI (Microsoft Installer)

Glad this thread got on the subject of editors. When I install hacks I first back up my scripts to my HD. Then while still using my ftp client (WS-FTP-LE) I right click on the script I want to edit and chose edit. This brings up notepad as the editor which is perfect, except when on WIN98 I am limited to 64K.

Now when it is larger I get the error this file is too large for Notepad to open would you like to use WordPad. This forces the FTP to upload the file and now I must use WordPad save to a new folder name it the correct name then reupload it.

If it is under 64K this works great because I just edit save and close Notepad and the file is uploaded to the server.

So to solve this I am looking for a simple editor. Like Notepad that will allow me to edit files right off the server via my FTP client that will handle more then 64K

Any referrals for a stand alone text editor that will handle large files. Must have to be 32bit I would imagine. I want just a simple replacement for notepad and just a text editor because I will have to make a file association on my local system and the FTP client.

Oh and free too [Linked Image] I just went over the line now didn't I LOL

Thanks

I'm a TextPad addict myself. =) I've used it for about 2 years now. Very quick, even on some of the larger files I've used. At least on Win2k. [Linked Image]

I use EditPlus, http://www.editplus.com/
I also use it for C++ and Java. The colored text is nice for picking up different coding. Also has the line# feature and a great search and replace.

Did you hit "yes" in the Control Panel after General Settings?

I made that hack awhile back but it never got noticed or posted in the database. Heck this hack isn't in the database either.

Okay, here is my two cents on the editor topic...

Arachnophilia

It does just about everything and is VERY cusomizable. I have been using it for nearly 4 years.

Did I mention the one click FTP? (yes, I do have and use WS_FTP Pro for initial transfers, but Arachnophilia uploads files from different directories so fast and easy that it makes WS_FTP look silly).

Oh yea, it is also FREE!

I can't say enough about this power editor.
