Ok, this is the best I can do for now. This the long awaited, Category Image Hack!! It's not complete, but it's a start. I'll update it every time I make a change. Unfortunately, this link is only good for a week, so I'll have to find a better place for it. In the meantime, enjoy!!

NOTE:

For any "addons" that you have running that also are attached to the bottom of
Ultimate.cgi, you may need to add additional ColSpan variables.

eet's looking real good DB, do you have a demo site for us to see what you have in mind? I am thinking about re-designing my stand318 site and these might really up the "cool" factor a notch or 2....

It's funny that you should bring that up Allen. I have three screen shots that I can make available, however, I have nowhere to store them. If I can find a server to store them on, I'll be more than happy to make them available. Trust me, when you see them, you'll understand the real power behind this hack.

Can someone add the hack that allows you to add an image to each forum, beside the light bulbs. I seen a really cool Freeware board, hacked like crap and I forgot it's address. It was an Offspring one? any1?

Personally I know of the hack, but all you would have to do is take what I've already given you and modify it.

Is this the hack to add more rows of custom icons, instead of the default 2 rows? Like on this UBB...

No, that is not a hack. Just add more icons into your icons directory, following the sequential number order which is already in there. Or replace any you want.

The hack they're referring to, is adding an icon next to each category on the forum summary page (Ultimate.cgi).

ok...
i added this and everything went well...
the only problem i got...in the cp...
i set it to yes to allow cat icons..
and i rebuild..
and when i go back in its set to no...
also when i upped the files back to the server....it took away all the categorys i had and left me with a tiny little frame where the categorys WOULD have been...

and how do i tell it what icons to use??..
in the cp it says category icon...but there is just a number in there...
do i just put in a image name thats in my non-cgi dor already??? or do i have to create a new folder in the non-cgi and put the icons there...????

im REAL confused with this one..

The same thing happened to me. It was annoying as hell!!

I would set the category icons to yes (in general settings), then I couldnt find where I input the images (you said there would be a place where you put the URLs) and then my forum categories colaped, and I had these small wierd windowes.

I was using ver 5.46b. thanks

CategoryHeader

}
$forumcategory = "$thisforumcategory";
} # end if categoryview eq yes

Do I replace the "CategoryHeader" with the $caticonlink?

48) Below should be the print statement that controls the look of the categories. REPLACE EVERYTHING in that print
statement with the following variable:

$caticonlink

O.k. what do I replace in the print statement?
print<

#48 was my exact problem everytime I tried to install it as well... give me a little time to look over it again and see where the problem is...

Hello everyone, long time lurker, first time poster [Linked Image]

I am trying to get this to work too, so I am taking a shot at it.

The $caticonlink should go just before the category name, and it only prints out a

I'll give it a go, if you already have it installed, you can try it too and let us know how it went.

tag on the same line as the cell contents. You may get some goofy spacing if you put it on the next line. Also, if you choose to add the column headers like this, remember to get your colspan right, depending on whether you have enabled "Moderator Column Display" in the General Settings section of the control panel. And then, if you ever turn "Moderator Column Display" off, you'll have a messed up colspan until you fix Ultimate.cgi again.

d. Good luck everyone!

Admins: feel free to move this post to another forum if you wish. It wasn't my intent to hog this thread.

I had trouble with this modification, too. So I set about getting the same functionality, more or less. My method only modifies Ultimate.cgi, and doesn't mess with the control panel or the database. There are drawbacks, though. Read my notes at the end of this post and back your Ultimate.cgi before starting.

Here's the area of Ultimate.cgi that you're going to focus on:

Change this section to reflect your categories and the files you choose to represent them as icons. Be sure to upload these to your non-CGI folder.

2.

That's it!

Notes

a. This is definitely not a serious modification, but more of a lazy hack. If you ever add new categories, you'll need to modify Ultimate.cgi again. This wouldn't be advisable if you have a non-Perl savvy administrator who might be doing category maintenance.

b. This only affects the front page when you have "Display Only the Categories on First Page?" set to "No" in the General Settings section of your control panel.

c. I extended this idea by bringing the "Topics", "Posts", "Last Post" and "Moderator" column headings down so that they appear over every category, which looks nice if you have a largish number of forums scrolling those headings off the top. So my print<

I then removed the headings line from the top of the page so it doesn't appear where it is not needed. So, I deleted:

Nice work Matthew, that should do the job if your categories remain relatively stable.

Thank you for helping.

There's two problems with this:

1. cpanel2 does not allow you to change "Display Category Icons?" to "yes"

and:

2. Ultimate.cgi loses the category strips for thin lines.

what happened? I've seen pics of this working in the database, so what's wrong with it?
