That's right. Clicking on "reply w/quote" causes the message you're replying to have a link to your message appended to its list of replies, and for your message header to have a link back to that message.
I'm in the process of adding a "reply" button to complement the "reply w/quote". Some people at my board (a debate board) don't get much use out of "reply w/quote" because they're quoting several different portions and replying beneath each quoted portion, so they cut-n-paste on their own. But being able to follow sub-threads within a thread with the message links will be real helpful.

Just posted revised instructions. The new code handles private forums and fixes a bug where editing a message would erase the reply information. It also adds a feature already present on many boards, returning the browser window to the message after posting or editing it, even for new topics.
