Provided that it's working the way it is supposed to, the benchmarks i'm running are showing about an average of 25% less CPU time usage:

Benchmark: timing 100 iterations of Original, Rewrite...
Original: 3 wallclock secs ( 0.24 usr + 2.44 sys = 2.68 CPU) @ 37.27/s (n=100)
Rewrite: 2 wallclock secs ( 0.33 usr + 1.71 sys = 2.04 CPU) @ 48.95/s (n=100)

So, if Greg says it's working the way it's supposed to...enjoy

rats, spoke too soon.. it appears to be erasing the # of posts, the "from" and "registered" info under the author's names in the preceding posts in a thread... any idea what might be causing that? I haven't made any other changes except this one since I added it...

Unfortunately i'm not familiar with the original, so the changes i made were what appeared to be quick translations of the previous code.

As I said, I very well could have overlooked something and removed an essential piece.

MM, if you find what it is, let me know and i'll add it in.

Ok, based on the possibilty of bugs, and the fact that i don't like having code of mine out there unless i've really gone over it, i recommend NOT using the routine up there.

Basically i was showing MM some things that i do to speed code up, and how i would write it. But, it was a quickie (like 5 to 10 miunutes), and no testing was done. Since im not familar with the real version, i may have overlooked key things.

Chalk it up to an exericse to see how i like to structure things (if you care ) and other than that, assume it is not worth using

Does this speedup effect the postings.cgi, because it is slow when I click on Post New Topic or Post Reply

I was wondering if anybody had any idea about the scale of optimization obtained for boards with differing numbers of members. I know that huge boards will get a significant increase in speed, but my board only has about 100 members. Will it matter?

This will speed up posting and update threads.
