I *know* this is the wrong forum for 5.47e suggestions, but there *is* no forum for 5.4x suggestions anymore.

The search routines in 5.x suck ... any easy code clean up or speed improvements any of you might have to reduce the load the script takes on my server would result in me kissing your ass for weeks to come. Seriously, I'll bet most of you could look through that file and find at least a few simple streamlining changes you could make, and you don't even need to document it well - just code to search for and code to replace it with is fine.

Thanks in advance.

The entire thing needs to be rewritten. That was supposed to be in UBB6, but it's just the same damn code.

If anyone decides to tackle this, I wish them luck, and my condolances...

Re-writing them would take a while and will probably never get done since most people like hacks that add new features.

I'm as much for hacks that fix sloppy code and speed things up as I am for new features that ride on top of the existing and aforementioned sloppy code.

I dunno... if someone like cal could just quickly look over the search.cgi file (I could send you a copy if needed) and optimize where they see the opportunity even that would be a big help.

How important is strict anyway? Are the 5.4x versions really that poorly coded, and if they are why are they faster than the new 6.0x strict versions?
