Ok, a bit ago I went to search the forums for things and was unable to search all forums. Obviously this puts a lot of load on the server and is probably why it was turned off. So here is my suggestion.

On the search page, have a list of all forums with a checkbox next to each one.

Let the BB admin set a max number of forums to search in the control panel.

Then only search the first X forums based on what the BB admin has set.

This will allow people like myself that really only need to search maybe 5 forums the ability to do so, without performing 5 seperate searches.

Just an idea, and one that I'm sure could be expanded upon to be even more useful. I hope someone is willing to pick this one up... It would be nice!

Don't bother - either way, the existing search system sucks. Majorly.

The entire problem is that it reads the ENTIRE search index into memory before searching.

Meaning that if you have a 4 meg search index, it gets turned into ~20-40 megs of memory before the search begins.

Many hosts simply kill any process that uses that much memory...

If you're going to do ANYTHING to the search, you'd might as well propose a complete rewrite. That's not totally out of the question either.

I hate the search feature it takes foreva on my board .. So i just took it out .. so no one could get there and then just mad eit so every topic is displayedand you just have to search each page .. on my old board.. i dunno what im doing for my new one about this

Well, I guess that's that. Charles, scream and yell to get it rewritten if you can. Personally I use search features all of the time, in any application.
