I've seen this hack on a board before. Sadly they changed to a php based one, but this hack rocked.
It's a seperate column next to the "number of replies" column and it shows how many times a topic has been viewed...
it looked something like

I guess it's use would come in determining wether ppl are viewing information that you are releasing that doesnt require them to post. Say if someone created a tutorial type topic, it would be nice to see how many times it had been viewed to determine wether its worthwhile posting similar information again.
Anyone interested in making the hack???
