Rounded Edges GFX Tutorial
Program: Adobe Photoshop 5.0+
Time Required: 3-5 Minutes
Difficulty: Easy-Moderate
Note: When I use measurements, I will be using pixels, not inches

Step 1
------------
Make a new image, it should be the size that you want for your rectangle (obliviously). To start off, I made a 400x400 image and filled the background with black. You should do the same.

Step 2
------------
Select white as your new foreground color. Make a rectangular marquee selection and fill it with white. You can make the selection any shape that you want, so long as you use rectangles. Take a look:

Step 3
------------
Switch from the Layers palette to the Channels palette. This is usually done by clicking a tab, depending on how you have your Photoshop set up. Make a new channel by clicking on the "new channel" button. You will see "Alpha 1" as the new channel.

Go back to the layer with your white 'tangles from step 2. Do a CTRL-A, then CTRL-C to copy the whole lot of it (w/Scottish accent) to the clipboard.

Now back to the Channels palette, click Alpha 1, then hit CTRL-V to paste what you just copied. You will see your design in Alpha 1 now.

Step 4
------------
With Alpha 1 still selected, go to the Filters menu, then Blur, then Gausian Blur. Set the amount to about 6.0. Click OK. Here's what you should see:

Step 5
------------
Still in Channels, and still with Alpha 1 selected, you need to go into the Image menu, and choose Adjust, then choose Levels. The Adjust Levels dialogue box will pop up and show you some options. Use the settings I used below:

In case you can't read those, they are 94, 100, 135. Leave the bottom settings alone. Press OK.

Now do another CTRL-A, then CTRL-C to copy your new rounded creation to the clipboard. Switch back over to the Layers palette, and hit CTRL-V to make a new layer.

Step 6
------------
Now it's up to you what to do - you can apply whatever effects or colors you want to your new layout. I did some simple stuff to mine, and now I could use the design as a navigation for a website or UBB.

Sweet, Squage! Thanks a lot. I've been wanting to do something like that for awhile, but i've been having to switch over to ImageReady to make the rounded rectangles every time. This will be really helpful. [Linked Image]

all i can is this: it might work in versions below 5.0, it just hasn't been tested in anything earlier. i use 6.0, but i know for a fact i could do it when i used 5.5, and 5.5 is essentially 5.0 w/the web features.

so, in short, it's a toss-up. you can try it and tell us if it works with versions below 5.0.
