I would like to see a hack that would show enough threads in a slow forum to fill the page sorted by date.
Using the alphabetical sorting really doesn't work very well, but it fills the page.

Can this one be done?? Please laugh

When you expand forums into new information areas people are hesitant to use the forum if nobody else uses it.
I have several busy forums but the slower ones don't attract attention when the users don't see topics of interest.
Users also get confused switching between alphabetical and time based..
The users can find topics with the search function but that doesn't build a specialty chat.
The more people share and discuss the smaller topics the more time they will spend on your site.
