A lot of the members on my UBB.Classic v6.4.0 forum are asking me "how can they subscribe to a particular Topic Forum, so that when someone posts in that forum, they will receive an email notification?" I've noticed that other forum proggies do have this option, including vBulletin. Can a Hack MOD be done for UBB? help

Allen has released a mod that allows you to subscribe to threads when you reply to them (if we'd allow everybody to subscribe to a whole forum, not to mention without requiring to participate there, it might cause a huge slowdown to the server any time someone posts something): Email Notifications of Replies for 6.4 and 6.5

LK:

I said to be able to subscribe to a Forum Topic, not the entire forum. If I have 12 different topics on my forum, a member should be able to subscribe to that particular Forum Topic. Other forum proggies have this option and it appears to be running with none of the problems you mention above.

A "topic" is a collection of related posts. Topics are also called "threads."

A "forum" is a collection of topics.

When you say "forum topic" do you mean forum or topic?

The topic LK linked to allows users to receive notifications when a reply is made to a topic that they have selected.

If you want users to get notified when a user posts a new topic or post to any topic in a forum, that's a bit different.

Kindly ignore the warning LK gave...

At one point ages ago, there was a limit of 200 mails that UBB could send out at once... this was done because the default installation of most versions of the more popular Linux distributions had a /var partition that was simply too small... sending out lots of email caused /var to fill up, which brought down the server. This really isn't something that needs to be worried about anymore, though your host may complain if you do end up sending out lots of mail...

This feature/hack would be ideal for moderators or supporters to "tech-type" forums. smile
