okay i have the following problem:
my UBB generates alot of traffic, and if i open the registering again i will have about 200 new members a day...
i get crazy of all the "Read only" members, so i was wondering if it would be possible to create a "register on invitaion".
this way the public registering is closed but members can invite friends to join the forum.
would that be possible, or am i driving nuts now?

You're driving nuts now Nah, it's actually quite possible... When registration is closed, you also have the option of entering a special code which is linked to the inviting user... Interesting concept... If no-one else takes it up, I'll have a stab at it

I thought of the exact same thing for my site some time ago (but did nothing about it ). Thought it would be cool to try to emulate a military "Mess" where members are by invite only. Since there's no way I could personally know all those "eligible" to be members, having a system were existing members can send invitations was the only way. In the end I scrapped the idea because it seemed to pretentious (in my context, anway) but I think it has a lot of merit, especially for high volume sites. I also like the "accountability" of know who invited who. Be neat to follow the threads of invitations...

Okay. I'll lay out the plan now in time for the weekend. You can fill me in if I forgot something - Existing members have the option of E-Mailing someone a special registration code. This code is linked to both the inviting member's name AND the new user's E-Mail address, to help against unauthorised entry.
- When registration is open, users have the option of entering the code or just clicking "Register". When registration is closed, users must enter this code.
- When the registration is complete, the inviting member's name is entered into the new member's profile. (Possibly, a "Users Invited" number is written into the inviter's profile too.)
- The registration code the user entered is removed from use.
Does that sound okay?

Well that sounds really okay i guess... you really thought about it!! But something else.. what is one user invites 200 new users.. so we want that? i guess we dont, so there should be a limit on it. Or they all should be transfered into the members cue. so we can give permission. What i also would like to see is that only ADMINS can select who is able to invite new users (but i guess thats way to much to create) and ofcourse, the "invited by" should be shown under the avatar or below the "rating" but i guess my mind is getting full of ideas... too much ideas... but if you knew me then you would know that i wanna have full control on whos at my forum
thnx alot for the time you put in... we all really ... REALLY appriciate it.!

One other suggestion: maybe a list of invited members and outstanding (unfulfilled) invitations when an admin views a user profile. (Either in the CP or the main board - whichever is easier ).

Phew, lots of ideas here, thanks for both of your additions I'll get them all written down and start on it on Saturday. Looks like it could be quite a successful addon...

Okay, I've made quite a bit of progress with this one The only thing I need to do now is the code that runs when the user registers (removing Invitation Code, inserting "Invited By" into profile, etc)... I'd give it until Monday and this should be finished
