I know that there is a hack to add AIM screenames and such, but how about a way to check to see if that user is online? The icon would blink if they are, it would be greyed if they're not.
Or maybe this has already been done?

AIM doesn't have this feature, and the sites who claim they do it don't seem to work

Possibly, but AOL wouldn't be too happy about it. It's almost certainly a violation of their terms of service.

When someone adds their AIM name in their profile, the application would receive this info and add that name to its "buddy list" - then it could report back to the UBB software what users are online and what users aren't. Charles - you may be right about it being a breach of the TOS. I'm not sure where to find out whether it is or isn't. If nothing else, hacking the AIM client is a breach of TOS. Dunno.. seems like a cool idea though. I wish I knew how to actually execute it.. hehe.

The TOC server was AOL's "open" implimentation to allow third party applicatiosn to allow users to use AIM. It is in all essance that matters the AIM server.

Actually many people have already done it, but it takes ages to load because they use slow connections and computers, so if you add it to your UBB it's gonna slow down topic loading... just search for AIM online indicator in google.. or if you're too lazy, just use the URL: http://arkansasmall.tcworks.net:8080/aim/USERNAME if "USERNAME" is online, the AIM yellow man is going to have a blue circle around him, and the box around the image will have 2 moving yellow things.
