Looks like Infopop is going to institute some branding policies related to UBB.

Celeste posted a reply to some custom graphics posted over at SK, you can read her post here .

Sounds interesting, I'm surprised there isn't any official announcement yet, just that post.

Actually its more than that. The way I read it is you can't create any custom graphics that say UBB or "Ultimate Bulletin Board" and have them displayed as part of the UBB.

As Celeste says in her post, more info will be coming out later. I'm a little surprised to see this post if the final policy hasn't been ironed completely out yet, nor announced.

It finally loaded.

It seems that if you use graphics that say "UBB" or "Ultimate Bulletin Board", then it must be some of the standard graphics that come with the software.

I believe you can still put any graphic at the top you want as long as it doesn't have "UBB" or "Ultimate Bulletin Board" on it.

Yes, that is the way I read it too, but aren't many of the theme sets in the graphics library set with UBB or Ultimate Bulletin Board in them? If so, based on that thread they won't be allowed to be used on a UBB. [Linked Image] I don't see any problems with the post/reply buttons, I think the biggest problem will be the titel graphics. Possibly even the banner at the top of this page might be in violation of this branding policy since its says UBB in it twice and its integrated into this board.

Following past performance, anybody upgrading or buying new will fall under the new policy.

We'll most likely need to change graphics in our DB as well to a generic title. I guess we'll wait and hear the "official" word first.

It is unusual for one of IP's people to say something like that before an official word comes out.

but, according to this "ruling", any graphics or logos we create ourselves are OK to use, as long as they don't have any Infopop slogans or TMs in them...

That's what it would seem.... any graphics are fine, as long as they do not contain their name on them.

that's fine with me - who really wants to use the word "UBB" on their forums, anyway? except for maybe UBBDEV, that is [Linked Image]

I agree, it probably won't affect very many people. I don't use any custom graphics on my site with UBB or Ultimate Bulletin Board in them anyway.

I'm actually a little surprised they hadn't done something like this earlier. Branding is very, very important to most companies. I worked for a Fortune 100 company for 5 years and you couldn't touch their logo. In fact, pretty much anytime you wanted to put the logo on something it had to be approved by management and sometimes the legal department.

ehhhh? (what will they dream up next? [Linked Image])

Whilst I understand that branding is important (especially their company name Infopop), I don't understand what the problem is when your branding their own product with its own name.ie.Ultimate Bulletin Board, afterall thats what it is called. [Linked Image]

Mind you like squage says who really wants the words "Ultimate Bulletin Board" in their logo anyway. Seems to me that most people would rather their UBB looked like anything but the stock UBB and they will go to great lengths to do this [Linked Image].

Just as an added thought is there anything stopping people from having just the words bulletin board in their logo? (just omit the Ultimate part .... [Linked Image])

Was I correct in reading that its ok to use the words Ultimate Bulletin Board as long as you add their "Branding Logo" to the image? [Linked Image]

What's the point......??? IMO they're going a little bit over the top with this. (but hey who cares anyway?)

What next???? [Linked Image] (maybe they'll set limits on how much you can alter the look of your UBB from the original)

Regards,[Linked Image]

Looks like this has already been hashed over relentlessly. But I figure I'll throw in my opinions...

The way I read it, we just won't be able to make any graphics with "Ultimate Bulletin Board," "UBB," or "Infopop" in them. We can still make other title graphics, as long as they don't contain those words.

G8Master, JUST the words "bulletin board" refer to an entire type of program, not a specific one. I'm sure a lot of different bulletin board makers would have a lot to say if Infopop tried to trademark those words.

And I didn't understand anything about their "branding logo." The way I got it was their branding logo was something they and they alone can use, and no one else can have anything to do with it.

Only time will tell, though. Surely someone at Infopop sees this as a bad PR move?!

Well look what I got InfoPop to reveal! Ha, and I was just posting my graphics over there the same way I do here.

This branding policy is interesting. As others have said, I think we just won't be able to use UBB or Ultimate Bulletin Board (or any other InfoPop TMs) in our graphics. That's no problem. I can rework all my currently completed graphics to just read "Bulletin Board System" or something like that.

Anyway, Celeste said their designer was going to send me their new graphics to get my opinion, but I haven't received anything yet.

nobody could ever trademark the words "bulletin board", it's simply preposterous, so we don't have anything to worry about there.

plus, a certain amount of creative freedom does exist, so if we could work the letters "UBB" in there subliminally, heyyy...

I'm still waiting anxiously to see the unveiling of the new Infopop "official" graphics, because at this point, I wouldn't touch their stock graphics with a 10-ft. graphic pole.

CE, you have made valuable contributions in the past, but have recently turned into a whiny person. Please refrain from insulting the people of this board, and the makers of the software we support.

Since we do not have an official policy to praise or complain about, I am closing this thread. We can gripe, complain, or say yippee when it's something concrete to do so about...
