On my screen I have to scroll across to see everything, not good IMO it should be set to 95% width. My personel view on the colours are they are little harsh but that's my view  . One last thing, I tried running a staff area and I have now dropped it because it looked like we could talk behind peeps backs and maybe that is not such a good idea for a new site... :rolleyes:

CP - Style Settings - [choose style], but, hmm, it already is 95%  IMO, staff forum == good. Staff always needs to discuss about something that is none of the members' business. I think you should have two different alt column colors, tho.

Yes, you have the right to do it, and it's better than getting flamed in the open boards, but it's not its only purpose. Private boards are also good for site stuff that the public shouldn't know yet, drafts of messages, etc. I'm sure you don't want your members to know everything as soon as you or the moderators do.
