Welcome to the FIRST ever---UBBDev CONTENT RULEZ Contest!!!

Here is your chance to showcase your forum. Unlike the Members Spotlight Contest which is based on design, creativity, site integration, modifications, etc., this contest will focus on the Content of your site. Since this is a whole new thang, we'll probably tweak the rules as we go along.

Basically, we want you to provide us with examples that you think best represent your forums. To enter into the contest, you must provide us with the following:

  • A brief description of what your forums is all about. It's purpose, the type of users you attract, and how long the community has been together.
  • Links to four individual threads that you feel best exemplify your board, at least two of these threads must be at least 1 month old.

Entries must be submitted prior to Sunday, April 14, 11:59pm UBBDev-time, after which judging will commence.
Each entry will be evaluted by UBBDev's team of Moderators and Administrators, who will vote on which site they feel best serves its audience. Note: that we will not be voting on which threads we like best, but the ones that we feel best represent the purpose of your forums and make a positive contribution to your community.
Now for the fine print:
  • Eligible entries can be any legal full-release UBB™. This includes older version 5.x boards!!! If you have a pirated board...don't bother entering.
  • The only eligible beta boards are version 6.2.x or 6.3.x boards.
  • Forum must have been established at least three months ago
  • Any warez, porno or warez/porn related site, or sites with links, banners, pop-ups to any warez or pornographic sites need not apply. We may exclude any other site that we deem to be inappropriate or contains inappropriate content, or content deemed to be inappropriate...you get the point.
  • Sites that illegally hide/remove/modify the Infopop copyright
  • Links to threads which contain excessive profanity or vulgar language will be removed. If your site is best represented by "inmaturity" then this is probably not the contest for you.

Entries can also be disqualified for any other reason at our discretion, with or without notice to the entrant.
The winner will have their site featured in the May U-Zine. We can't promise any "real" prizes at this point in time, although we'll see what happens down the road.
Rules of this contest may be modified at any time if needed.
Good luck!

2 noticed that I think you should agree with wink :
1. 6.3.0 betas are also accepted.
2. It's okay to modify the copyright wording legally, as in removing the line break or the URL.

Anyhow, I always wonder why doesn't UBBDev.com forums participate in these contests, for example the intelligent discussion at Q&A topic. wink

I mean something like: Sites that hide/remove/modify the Infopop copyright illegally.

or Sites that hide/remove/modify the Infopop Copyright without the last's written permission to the 1st that works in the 3rd-party company, etc wink

Sounds pretty good. I have to get my UBB content back up. Nobody's posting in it because the main forum went to vB.

Hi Chris...thanks for signing up. Please edit you post to include links for 4 threads that your site can be evaluated upon. That makes it easier for us to judge.

I see no reason not to. For those of us who don't speak/read the language, we can try to make us of one of the web translators. They aren't always 100%, but should help.

wuhoo! game on! smile

imma enter twice.

why? cuz... well... cuz there's no rule against it, and i currently have the free time. woo!

so, lets break it down:

round 1: my personal forum

quote:
A brief description of what your forums is all about. It's purpose, the type of users you attract, and how long the community has been together.
my message boards went online in october of 2000, back in the glorious days of ubb 5.45 something something.

since that time, my membership total has grown to 375 or so (starting, really, as a core group of around 35). now that "the word" is catching on, i get a lot of people who just pop in for a peak, and decide they want "in" on the conversations - atleast 1 or 2 a week.

the forum's purpose is incredibly varied, as they, like my website, are pretty much 'me', online. my tastes, pet peeves, average day, favorite shows, etc, and my forum reflects that; as each user comes on to discuss my varied thoughts, and/or express their own. so, i guess, to sum it up, my forum is "you, online"

quote:

wow... just 4. i have difficulty with that, as there is such variety on the forum! but... lets have a go:

1) MARCH 2002 -- id have to spotlight part of my "weblog" (like an online diary -- but guys dont have diaries!! shut up!!), as thats something i go to daily. *2 notes: this one forum is backwards, most recent post is on the top. and also, this is a 'rob-only' ('read-only') forum:

2) ** my take on the day ** -- very nice and VERY real conversation, relaying the experience each user had on sept 11th.

3) religious? prove it! -- like the 9-11 post above, an excellent example of how people who really just came to my forums to have fun can settle down, and have a very serious debate / conversation (tho always with hints of humor and/or personality)

4) is ww REALLY one of dc\'s "big three"? -- something from my comics section, as that was really my first forum. basically, its a great example of how my users can range from serious to funny, opinionated to minded, reply once or one hundred times, closed off to welcome. great variety, and i love that! smile

ok, thats it! smile

i think those are really good examples of what my forum is all about, and give a great "first-look" view into the place.

anyway, thanks for stoppin by!

...now... onto round (and page!) 2....

round 2: the DC Comics Message Boards

quote:
A brief description of what your forums is all about. It's purpose, the type of users you attract, and how long the community has been together.
i dont own it, mind you, but i've been the admin since its creation, which was in january of 1999, back when 'infopop' was justa strange word to most of you smile

it was originally a forum intertwined with AOL (keyword: dc comics!) but eventually made the jump to the web, in the groundbreaking format. and, really, i think it has been an amazing standard, to base off of and look up to, for many of the message boards, personal and commercial, alike.

its purpose is simple: to discuss comics! its divided into many categories, broken down by characters and/or their respective books, and each set has their own incredibly loyal and vastly different following.

and with 35,000 members (tho recently trimmed to about half that, removing those who registered atleast 2 months ago, but never posted, in an effort to clean up), thatsa lotta variety!

quote:
Links to four individual threads that you feel best exemplify your board
1) Obscure DC Characters -- great example of how older fans teach and explain things to younger fans, and how conversations easily flow through out.

2) The ALL-NEW, ALL-NOW Hal Jordan Club -- one of the better "my character is better than yours" discussions. its a classic! from indepth explanations, to immature "nuh-uh's," it really shows the full range of the comic fan poster in what is, perhaps, comics' hottest on-going debate.

3) What are Seth\'s Other Powers? -- justa fun, running conversation. one of the more "off topic" (not comic related) post i'd allow.

4) Is Supergirl next for the Axe? -- a fantastic example of fan / creator intervention on a thread. in some forums, the books' author or illustrator or editor (etc) will happily join in on the discussions. this such author, Peter David, makes one of his many memorable (for better or worse) apperances inside this thread. -- just as a preview, his opening retort is "bite me" wink

ok. thats succesfully wraps up round 2.

the DCMBs are certainly hard to judge as they are so incredibly massive (we're looking at a few thousand NEW posts, PER DAY, in addition to, literally, millions of hits on a monthly basis). they can be fun, they can be frustrating -- but they're certainly addicting. and i still stand by my statements above, that their success and conduct have shaped and formed thousands of others on their own forums.

and, bottom line, the DCMBs are probably the main reason i wanted this 'community development' forum to exist here on ubbdev, in the first place. its old, its clunky, its not overall pretty, and hasnt been updated since it was first created! but... that doesnt keep it from being the best damn discussion forum on the net.

hands down.

Description about the board:

Well, since none of my sites really had any purpose, the forum never had a specific topic or purpose. My first forum went online somewhere in the 2000 using a 5.45(x=any letter in a-z). Since that, the board has been growing everyday, and it still doesnt have real purpose.

After having over 50,000 total posts, I had to switch servers, and I couldnt save none of them (i felt so bad) and now our count just passed the 20,000 (getting back on our feet) and the member flow is always at least 1 new member a day smile

Our board mostly attracts weird, crazy people, who just want to talk to other people with their same personality, although they like to fight and argue time to time laugh Lately they also like to create and play RPGs, and write too!

The 4 topics:

Reaction - some type of game, was at 616 replies

The Word Game - how can a board not have this? Over 1130 replies, it starts to get crazy after some pages...

Am I batman? - the name just says it all laugh

Escape from the old folks - one of the longest RPGs that didnt get deleted...yet wink

http://www.smashboards.com

Yay, maybe my boards have a chance. Okay, the base content of my boards was a game called Super Smash Brothers for the N64. After the game got old, everyone started to post in the General Discussion room. Now a sequel came out for the GCUBE called Super Smash Bros Melee and our forums are ever popular now, but not only for the games. We currently have about 7,000 registered members. The boards are about 1.5 years old. The site is almost 3 years old.

I also have a very big site to back up the forums and attract new members daily. The site is located at: http://www.smashworld.org

The main section of this site that attracted a lot of the forum users was "Smash Melee World" located at http://www.smashbrosmelee.com

If age has anything to do with the contest, I'm only 16.

The targeted audience of my site are 11-25 year olds. A majority of our visitors are 12-17, but we have quite a few colleagues too.

Here are four decent threads of our forums:

1) The Neverending Story 2 - with over 3,200 posts, this is only the sequel topic of the original "Neverending Story" topic that was lost in a site crash.

2) Debates... - just a topic that go started by one of our members to randomly debate different things, and even though it had a slow start it really took off.

3) Gay Marriage - at smashboards we have some very extensive debates over just about anything religious you can think about. This topic is just one of many showing this. We have a few posters that are renowned as "the best debaters of Smash World Forums". Debates are and have been a huge part of our online community.

4) Stories from London - I picked this topic to show that people from ALL over the world visit our forums. People from all different ethnical backgrounds really make it a unique place to post messages. Some of the humor of forgeign people is totally and uniquiely outrageous!

Well, there you go.
