a few of the other threads in here have brought up various hacker issues, security bugs, server down time, etc...

so, do you have any contigency plans? were something to go horribly wrong and your server dies or a hacker deletes files (etc) -- do you have backups of your threads or members? were something to happen -- could you make it un-happen?

I use the backup hack available here and backup every single day. Disaster recovery is a very large portion of my job.

I've given up trying to save members files/posts because of 56k's but I always back up the forum files and hacks.

how is the hack? and how exactly does it work? (what does it backup?) -- might be worth a try.

i've made full ftp server backups a few times -- mebbe once a month or so. but even with my cable modem, its nowhere near a smooth or fast process, nor is it even overly beneficial (considering there are hundreds of new posts per DAY, so even if i lost everything, restoring my boards via my back up could still potentially lose thousands of threads).

https://ubbdev.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=33;t=000056 - it works in 6.3. what it does is to tar and gzip your whole noncgi, cgi or members dirs, and if you like it to backup something else, you can also add it as 'Other' (or Custom or whatever), using the Wordlets (it's instead of mod cp addon, it's not words).
It only works if you're hosted in Unix, ofcourse, cause Windows can't generate tar files

I recommend this hack to anybody on a *nix server. It is fast and clean.

Does it compress the files in any way so the download is smaller?

I backup everything in the Members directory, all the variable files, and all the Forum files every 2-3 days. Even though I have dial-up, it never takes more than 45 minutes. I also keep the latest backups of all of my sites' files in two different locations (one for development and testing, and one for "safe-keeping") on my PC. About once a month I backup everything on CD-RW just in case something should happen to my hard drive.
