Hi all. I am just thinking out loud here. Please feel free to comment. But what is the story here? It's so nice to be able to modify the UBB so easily. But all the version updates.. Geez. It's so horrible. Who would want this? It seems so unreasonable. The program is nice to begin with but it's absolute ZERO without the hacks. Why doesn't Infopop do something to make their product more appealing? It's so boring without the hacks but so difficult to keep up with updates. I have no time to do what needs to be done but I really do enjoy having a nice message board. I'm a perfectionist and my board hasn't worked in weeks. My page hack doesn't work anymore and I can't figure out why. And my banner ads don't work in some places.. I feel bad about basically giving up with UBB but I just don't have the time to do what needs to be done. I'd rather use a program that had MOST of the hacks STOCK. I will be converting soon...

I think Sal just wanted a discussion on this atom....

Sal, the problem with all the "added hacks" are what's absolutely necessary for you and me, is nothin but fluff to a lot of others... infopop caters to the largest possible audience possible.

I hate to say this, mainly cuz of where I am here, but the largest/ busiest ubb's are completely stock, maybe color and graphic changes, but nothing else... we modify ubb cuz we like to. Most general users wouldn't know or care if they could close a thread immediately after posting, it's the content they show up for...

whiz bang only gets you so far...

Having said all that, anyone with a valid license leaving before seeing v6 is jumping the gun more than just a little...

Righ, Allen. I was just looking for a discussion and the feelings of others. I didn't mean to offend anyone or hurt feelings. Simply amazing.

Anyway. I do intend on waiting for UBB6. If I upgrade to it I'll probably just leave it stock because I don't have time to play. But to me, it will be so boring compared to the possibilities. I really wonder why Infopop wont add some of these hacks. They could make more money by selling a full-featured version as opposed to a flat version. It would make me happy and many others as well.

Like I said, I like the UBB. But I've been buying vB's for my latest projects and experiments. I wish that mattered to Infopop.

Well, like Allen says, many, especially some very popular UBB's, are simply stock UBB's.

If Infopop were to start adding cp add-ons in the stock UBB for all the hacks out there I think the code would get very bloated and we would start seeing performance issues. I personally would rather see leaner, more efficient code in UBB6 rather than a slower, more bloated code.

I've been to some UBB sites where it looks like people just added hacks to add hacks and they don't end up contributing anything to the "community" of the board.

People come to BBS's for one reason only, discussion, not to look at how clever someone was on adding fluff. I'm on a cable modem and I have found UBB's that were so hacked up it made me feel I was on dial up because the thread display had soooo much fluff to load. eek

Just my .02 on this issue.

I am altering the deal. Pray I don't alter it any further.
