Some of the users here have asked me to explain what has happened to a couple of our long-time moderators who "mysteriously disappeared" this past week. To dispel rumors that have begun circulating, I will give the facts as they happened.
We have been working on getting our UBB v6 ready for launch and had begun getting opinions from our moderators in regards to graphics, color, layout, content and future long-term and short-term strategy regarding ubbdev's expansion as the leader among forum support sites on the internet. In doing so, we opened our beta site to our moderators for viewing and comments. In the past week, I began to notice a much higher traffic level on the beta site than would be considered normal, so I checked access logs for there and our private forums.
On Thursday, the 25th, we found out that 2 of our trusted moderators had been giving a developer of another forum script access to our private forums with their username and password. We are not sure how many others were allowed access, but we're positive about this one individual. In the ensuing question and answer period, both moderators and this developer admitted to accessing our private forums and allowing him to read our threads on several occasions. Immediately after their admissions, their status as moderator here was removed and all three had their posting privileges removed.
It is a sad day when those that you trust can no longer be trusted. It is also a sad day when you find an individual that you go out of your way to make comfortable and welcome on your site, despite developing a competing product, will stoop to such an unprofessional and immature level. We wish all 3 the best in their endeavors, competition is good after all, but we can no longer trust them to be a part of this site.

I am still in shock about this. How a professional perl programmer and a PHP guru could stoop so low? And, about the developer of the free bulletin board, well, let's say i am more shocked about him. ------------------ Modification Developer of the Ultimate Bulletin Board Due to time limitation, I do not offer support Via. Yeah, definitely sad to hear that. I'm curious - is IP logging feature part of UBB 6 or did you accomplish this via server log audits? If this was implemented in UBB 6, this would defintely simplify security audtits for me. Thx for your time.

It was indeed a shock... It's been a very sad and unsettling past few days knowing that a trust was broken within our team, twice no less, and that another forum developer could actually do something so underhanded...

I think that the important thing to remember here is that we are running a business. This type of thing does, in reality, happen more often than not. In the past year we have had more than our fair share of these types of events. Unfortunately, it would be foolish of me to say that they won't happen again. All that I can ask is that each of us, moderators and members alike, take a moment to think about how much this community has positively impacted our lives and what development would be like without it. If, in the future, you know of someone or hear about activity that you feel is counter-productive to UBBDEV, please do not hesitate to alert either Allen, Deb or myself. Together we can reduce the fequency of these events. - DB ------------------ Administrator UBB Developers Network https://ubbdev.com/

Although an event like this is both disheartening and saddening, there is one positive way you can look at this.
Actually, there are two.
One, despite all the nasty, underhand, random horrid things happening to Ubbdev, you're still here and better than ever.
Two, Noone ever tries industrial espionage unless they think the competition has something/is better than they are. While it's an odd way to complement you guys, and I'm sure you'd have preferred flowers/alcohol/chocolate/money, you should be flattered.
As always, you all have my support and thanks for the great place you've made here.
Good luck, if there's anything I can do to help, let me know.

I actually know how you feel. At my site we just recently found out that an admin had given someone the FTP password to the webite I am an admin at. It was a very messy situation.

I see, judging by Andy's response, that Denial is not just a river in Egypt: http://www.ikondiscussion.com/ikonboard/support/topic.cgi?forum=2&topic=1927 I hear there is definitive proof that it did happen: ip logs, written admissions, etc. the usual stuff they would require in an investigation. I got's my sources.

Sad state of affairs when you can't trust those near you... I trust that the administration did everything they could to remedy the situation and resolve everything for the best of everyone here. Yes, it is a business, but it is also a "family" of sorts... that is what makes things so personal at times... Good luck with everything... (love the changes... finally back after a brief vacation... nice look guys...)

OK OK, I can hold it for a little while, but they are saying we have no proof . I'll bet the 3 of them are really squirming in their boots, with their "holier-than-thou" Geek Trash selves. One day soon, the world will know - so let it be written, so let it be done.
