Hey UBBers! UBB6 is around the corner and I'm sure you all are wondering what hacks will be made available on launch?
Me, Dark Templar, Aharon, Borg_5x8 and Phillip have developed the following mods for UBB that should (pending finalization) be released:

  • Stars Hack 2001
  • Who's Online 6
  • IP Logging on Registration
  • AIM Buddy and ICQ Flower
  • Avatar 6.0

Plenty more will follow as developers learn the ropes in UBB6.

Currently, the UBB6 avatar hack allows users to enter a URL to a picture.

No, its not a feature of UBB6.
I didn't create the hack, BTW.
The user enters the URL, and it shows up under their name.

Well, I guess I might as well list what I'll be working on. My order of hack creation will likely be something like the following:

    [*]"Edited X Times" Hack

    [*]Memberlist v3.0

    [*]Karma Hack v2.0

    [*]E-Mail Notification for Replies

    [*]Move Redirect Hack

    [*]Forum Subcategories

[*]...whatever else I have to convert along the way, like the preview hack and a few others.

I can't promise any release dates on these hacks, but since I have to get them written before I can upgrade my site to UBB6, I'm going to be working on them pretty furiously. If you know of any other hacks that need to be rewritten, or just simply created, let me know and I'll let you know if it's on my list. Of course, it all depends on what ends up getting released with UBB6 come Wednesday, so we'll see what happens.

A note to the staff here: Do you think we could get a UBB6 category created, or at least a forum? It would make things a lot easier for those of us rewriting hacks.

I guess I'll throw mine into the ring as well:

  • Return of the Blue Arrow (Javascript version)
  • Originating timestamp in thread listing
  • XHTML Transitional 1.0 compliant replacement front end templates (including CSS hooks)

None of my hacks will be released before UBB6 leaves Beta. I highly advise my fellow hackers to follow this lead.

Each Beta has had extensive code changes. I antipate that either Beta 7 or 8 will be the one released on the public, and there will be at least two betas before the final beta is declared stable. Attempting to perform extensive code modifications on beta software is never wise, especially when the idea of a public beta is to help get the bugs squished, not introduce new ones via code hacks. [Linked Image]

This voluntary "off limits" hacking time will also allow the code hacking community to preview and adapt to the extensive changes that UBB6 will make to everything we know.

Look forward to an article about this very soon after public beta.

I would also HIGHLY advise users of hacked boards NOT to upgrade to UBB6 until we can develop a script that will prevent UBB6 from clobering additional member profile and thread fields. You could be looking at a MAJOR loss of data if you upgrade to a beta from a hacked board.

I'm *VERY* serious about that... Right now, the upgrade process is *NOT* hack friendly.

And, of course, on the 31st, I'll be re-launching Flare , my UBB... you'll want to see what these templates are capable of, after all. [Linked Image]

I also plan to see what it will take to adapt the files to work with perlex, a similar program to mod_perl, for NT/Win2K.

Sounds good jigga...

Yes, the perlex adaptation will be quite large, affecting all cgi files, not sure if I can do it. I'll give it a shot tho... there are several people in the thread here I plan to bug for answers...[Linked Image] It will be made to work with borg's vinkulum, for sure, definitely something people wouldn't wanna install on a weekend...[Linked Image]

I have one that I have been working on too. [Linked Image]

By the way, you folks should be thinking larger. Hacks are old, think entire Modules. Think anything you add should be hooked into the UBB via the control panel, written as it's own file (with template?) then merged into the UBB in such a way that the next person's hack will not ruin yours. Make sure it is removeable easily too.

My module will have a script that backs up changed files, makes my changes, and has a removal feature to restore the board exactly as I found it. Remember this is just perl. Not only is this all doable but it doesn't take long at all.

I challenge you all to adopt similar thinking.

Now pardon me while I stand back and watch.

Also remember something else people... The UBB6 cache system will mean that hacks that need to create content on the fly, such as the Favorites hack will be VERY difficult to implement without destroying the cache...

Modules... yeah... and gotcha Charles. I don't plan to do much at all before finalized code, it would be a major waste of time.

Modules -

I want/plan to port a calendar to ubb to:
- allow user's birthdays entered in their profile show up.
- have hooks into them from news articles to list dates for events
- a couple of other things I haven't thought of yet...[Linked Image]

I would like to port the auction file to work with v6 as well.

Another idea, a links-type script that will insert the new signee's ubb site into itself on registration... muy bueno!

A port of the newspro script (hopefully coranto will use strict)... I don't think Dark_wizard will be finishing his, tho I may be mistaken.

An upload function as well.

All of these would use open source scripts to avoid licensing issues (at least on their end..[Linked Image]), and they all will require me to learn quite a bit more about perl/cgi than I know now..[Linked Image] They should be easily upgradable to newer versions of the ubb and run on mod_perl. I may never see daylight again...[Linked Image]

Oh dear god, I can hear the naming convention problems with the modules already... [Linked Image]

You reccomend creating modules for medium-to-large hacks, rather than ALL hacks, I assume navaho?

I would not recommend creating a whole new module just to stick someone's picture under their username, no. That requires a whopping one whole line of code. Something like that I can't see making a module for.

Something that will add an entirely new functionality to the board should probably be a module I would think.

For instance. I thought of something I could use but would not be used by even 1% of all UBB users. Clearly it is not worth adding into the UBB if less then a small handful of users would turn it on. So, I'm making it an add-on module.

It will have a whole screen to itself in the control panel, it's own .cgi file to run it, and it's own template. I will include a script you can run from a browser that will back up any other files I might have to touch in order to hook it into my UBB and write in any changes I need. In this case I just need to add a few lines to the control panel navigation to access my new screen and modify one template. If you wish to uninstall then my script will just restore the backed up files.

It's harder work for the module writers but easier for a hacker and results in cleaner scripts if done right.

Of course there is one problem I can see coming.

If I add modules after mine and then want to uninstall mine I have to uninstall all the modules after mine, then uninstall mine and reinstall all of the others again. To me this is still better then trying to hand strip a hack out after I have long forgotten how I put it in and where all the modifications are.

The mods I mentioned earlier should just be a matter of adding a link to them wherever you want users to find them, as most of them will just read ubb's variables, or profile fields, shouldn't be any other coding but that (like the everyauction script in our beta forums).

Except for the perlex, which may be just impossible, or nearly so...[Linked Image]
