I've used a lot of hacks from here, and always been impressed by the dedication and enthusiam some people show to boards and the development. However I was wondering what you prefer about boards compared to "real time" conversations, IRC etc?

Just thought I'd ask, however keep up the good work and many thanks to everyones hacks I have used. tipsy

"Real time" communication, like a chat, or even voice, is good, but for a site that reaches people in all 24 time zones, not very user-friendly, as it would require users to be up at odd hours if everyone is to participate.

Someone could write the most eloquent poetry, but in a chat, it is lost forever quickly in the crowd of age-sex checks...

Anything worth keeping is quickly lost in chat, but is available continuously in a forum like this, other people can add to it, comment on it, search for it, catalogue it, etc... it is always there.

Yeah, I like going to boards and reading an entire idea from someone as opposed to going into a chat and being bombarded with age/sex/location checks with the entire room on a continuous scroll.

I never respond to age/sex/location checks in chats or IM's. I once used AOHELL, and my profile is STILL their, since i use the SAME name for AIM as i did with AOHELL, i get bombarded with 12-15 year old girls looking for a guy.

I hate a/s/l checks....bah

Fair points - the a/s/l-ers can be a nightmare - a combination of IRC and boards could work quite well though smile

An IRC network where you reigster a nickname, connect and everything you type in the channels is also posted onto forums?
