If you suddenly found out that someone had access to your FTP and was deleting files as fast as they could go, what would you save?
Guess what a fun night I had last night....
Anyone any ideas why private messages would randomly stop working?

hmmm ...
I'd say memberlist and message threads
Do you believe in love at first sight, or should I walk by again?

my backups... we have been there a couple of times... member files first, then threads... we always keep backups of the cgi files on hand, and a copy of the Members directory (updated as often as you feel necessary) on your hard drive is pretty essential.

Yeah..
Hey, any idea why all of Private messaging would work, cept for reply and forward?
Using the latest version of Private messaging, something got screwed up when I was doing something with the latest codebuttons mod, fixed everything but that..
Any ideas (5.45c..)..

Because the site I work for happens to run that?
And because it's so hacked we don't want to upgrade, would mean losing weeks upon weeks of work..
And because.

See, I knew that would be the argument that won you over..
But yeah, I don't think our site will be sticking with UBB too much longer, so no point in upgrading, and the custom layout the site has required so much work to design in the first place, that upgrading would be a nightmare.. serious nightmare

A custom layout should work the same upgraded to another ubb or anything else for that matter... that's an odd reason to not upgrade... hacks, nahhh...most users don't care what hacks you have installed, except for pm's, and maybe who's online. v6 has one, and we'll be adding the other with a click of the button soon enough...
Anyways, people don't upgrade for lots of reasons... we always upgraded in using a file compare program in < one hour. I upgraded a 5.45c (heavily modified 50+ mods installed) to 5.47d 2 weeks ago in about an hour...

I dunno, I never fancied trying it, whenever I try change something, I always mess something else up.. and the layout is heartily dependent on various parts of the ubb I totally changed.. plus, I don't understand the ubb as well as you Allen, for instance this problem I've been having with the stupid PM's for EVER now, and I still haven't solved it. I'm sure I'm overlooking something hideously simple, god knows what..
Just keep getting ISEs.. checked permissions, restored backup files, reinstalled the hack, you name it, I've tried it.. driving me crazy.. argh.

I have done a few... Tho I can't write a lick of new code... yet... I plan to dig in more once we get past this beta period. What problems are you having with pm's, what are you trying to do when you get the error? And do you have code buttons installed? It installs easily if you folow the directions to the letter, but there are lots of little things that can set you back if you don't watch.

Its the codebuttons thing that screwed it all up actually, had it all working fine, then tried to do the most recent version of codebuttons, followed instructions to the letter, and totally screwed up.. I have it fixed now, just went to a much earlier backup and started all over again.. I swear, the person who deleted everything on my site is really really really going to die..

Going back to the original topic. I would cut their FTP connection on the server. Then probably, think about all the ways I would kill them if the were in front of me, but then be brightened up by the fact I have regular backups.

Well considering our current host is a terrible one, they actually acted pretty fast in cutting their connection to the ftp.. but by the time that happened, the person had already been deleting stuff for 75 minutes..
We had backups of most stuff.. and luckily, the person was SO intent on destroying our UBB, that they totally missed out on deleting the stuff we couldn't replace.. Because of server space we've been pruning board threads down to 7 days recently, nothing we couldn't stand to lose.. All the other stuff we had backed up, so yeah, took a while to repair everything, but we have 90% back up and are just waiting on the other co-owner to put up the stuff he has backups of..
Still.. scary, sitting there watching folders just disappear..
