3 boards that I visit regularly have switched from UBB to other means of BB if you know what I mean? What's the deal? The guys on this board are kicking hiney creating these great hacks. That's weird to see 3 places that I visit everyday change just like that.

Curious .. had they switched from UBB 5 or UBB 6? If they switched from UBB 5, it would be obvious why - $$$. If they switched from UBB 6, we also know probably why: performance.

Guys, I think he means people using UBB are switching to other types of Bulliten Boards such as Ikonboard, YaBB, phpBB, etc...
If that is what you mean, the people who owned the board before didn't have a liscence (pirated) so they closed it down or something along the lines of that.

UBB to a "free" board - it was probably a pirated UBB to begin with and the user was either taking heat or getting annoyed at being unable to find copies of new versions.
UBB to another commercial product - switched either due to cost or perceived performance/feature benefits.
UBB.classic: Love it or hate it, it was mine.

Sorry, been away. I have no idea if these sites pirated them, but from what I remember the one site said that they switched for 2 reasons:
1) security issues 2) performace issues
I didn't want to mention names because I didn't know how the board would feel about that, but yes all three switched over to vBulletin.

Performance is totally subjective on what hardware you're using to running that BB system.
Security. Every product strives to be as secure as possible. Through the history of vB and UBB, there have been security bugs. That's probably not going to change. To say that one BB product is more secure than the other is very foolish because there has not been ONE BB product on the market which had to update itself with a new version due to a security prob.

Maybe there server didn't support cgi, To tell you the truth, a vB Runs faster because it's on MySQL, maybe thats why.
