It'd help if you could tell us what you'll mainly be using the computer for... games? Office work? 3D rendering?

400-500 dollars? Hmm, I would have to look. You could maybe upgrade your computer with that money maybe. Not sure about a new computer.

I'm from the UK so I don;t know how much computer stuff cost over there.

But I'm guessing from the replys you can't buy a decent premade onefor that amount.

If I were you I would build one from yourself.

The good thing about that you can choose which bits to put in there and when you get more money you can upgrade it!!

Just get a good motherboard, cpu and memory to begin with the rest you can by second hand (auctions) and when you get more money upgrade the other bits.

Building a computer is easy not as hard a you might think, go to:

To get an idea of how its done.

You can build you own computer there too. Those sites are pretty good.

this one takes around 1 1/2 - 2 minutes to boot.

my computer takes around 15-45 seconds, depending on loaded software.

the pc i am on right now takes about 50 seconds, that include the os-selection screen (winME (for my bros games etc etc), win2k pro, linux mandrake 7.2)

if you, like others have suggested, build your own pc .. you can get something pretty good for $500

Blah, I am gonna spend more then $500, im looking at 600-800 now. frown oh well.

there's no point spending $2000 on computer stuff, that in 2 months is outdated and worth half that.

The RAM that you've got in there right now won't work... You're using a KT133 mobo, which only supports PC100 or PC133 (SDR) ram, not DDR ram.

If you want the DDR ram, you can get another motherboard that supports DDR (might I suggest the Iwill KA266 -> $132 @ Directron?). Otherwise, you'll have to change your RAM to either PC100 or PC133 types (PC133 is faster, and the prices for both are usually idental, so get PC133 if you can).

One more thing, never buy a case online. The shipping is just outrageous and when I buy cases, I like to see it all around to make sure if there is enough room and other things.

The only ABIT motherboard with DDR support is the KG7-RAID which I haven't seen sold yet...oh yeah don't get the MS Intellimouse Explorer unless you have really big hands. I'm about to put mine in the closet and just buy the Logitec version which is smaller and more comfy...
