Im trying to hook up my Lab Top to my Desk Top using a direct connection with a Catagory 5 connection between eithernet cards.

Now I just cant seem to set up the two to see each other.

The Desk Top uses Windows ME and the other uses Windows 2000 pro.

Networking is not exactly plug and play. Did you install a network protocal, set identies and share levels on both computers?

Sadly not. I have no clue how to set up the protocals.

It's a little too complicated to explain the process in posts. I'm going to see if I can find a web site I once seen that shows it step by step for each OS.

Anyone else know the site I'm talking about?

Nevermind - I found it in the help files. I need the Direct Connection Installed in my pc witch I do not have. Even in the Add/Del Program file.

Do you know where I could find this?

Ok I have the direct connection installed on ME - but I cant find it on Windows 2000.

Make sure you're using a cross-over cable. For direct connections I don't believe you can use just a regular cat5 patch cable, but rather a cross-over cable.

If you're going to do a lot of networking, why not just get a hub or even a router? It would be a more robust network.

ok I have direct connection to my lab top, One as Guest and the other as Host with Administrator log in. The problem is when I try to directly connect it doesnt ask the port im trying to connect with. It just says COM1 and LPT.

The direct connection isn't for the ethernet ports. If you like you can come over to my boards, that's exactly what we do there and use the search. If you don't find what you need just register and ask. There are a lot of helpful people there. Just clck on netwerkin in my sig.
