Ok, so, I have a question for anyone familiar with the registry (i think) or IE...

For some odd reason, I'm really obsessed about windows being maximized and perfectly aligned and stuff like that. But recently my IE windows somehow got unmaximized and they're a weird size floating in the middle of the desktop. And no matter how much I try, they won't stay maximized - once i close it and open another window, it's back to it's weird position. So does anyone know what the registry key or .INI file or whatever is, that controls the position and size of default IE windows? And how I can reset it so they always are maximized by default?

In another semi-related question, does anyone know how I can reset the start menu's click history, so when I install new programs they're automatically put in alphabetical order, like they're supposed to be anyway? The auto-sort thing always seems to last for about a week after I've installed Windows before failing and forcing me to resort them manually all the time. That's just one of those other things that I'm anal about for some reason. I'm weird, so sue me.

Thanks in advance.

---Jamin

For your second issue (the sorting of the Start menu), just right-click on any program or program group in the list and then hit "Sort by Name."

I used to have that sorting problem too, before I moved to XP. It just doesn't work properly -- try clicking about 1 million times after a fresh restart .

Yeah, I know there's that. But I don't want to have to do that! I want it to do it by itself, like it always tries to do for about a week after a clean install.

I saw a program this one time, one of those programs that's supposed to delete every trace of you from computers by removing everything you ever did... and it did this. It called it the "click history" of the start menu, and it somehow cleared said "click history" and after it did that, everything started automatically being sorted again. But I forget what the program was called, and I'm just wondering if anyone else knows what the click history is so I can clear it myself.

argh the same thing happens to me with IE non-maximized windows... I used to have a program lying around called regmon which would show me what's going on with the registry, but I can't find it anymore, so I have no idea what keys it looks for

Regmon is here, but I think I'm close to a solution myself.

I have the same problem, whenever I maximise my windows and open IE again they are back to the way they were.

I have the same problem too.

Except, lately all I have to do is maximize it and it stays. You might try one of these two things:

1. Run > regedit > HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Internet Explorer > Document Windows > Maximized > Right Click, Modify > Change to yes.

This seems most likely what it would be, but I'm not sure if it changes back automatically when you resize the window. If it doesn't work...

2. Run > regedit > HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Internet Explorer > Main > (Right window, the bottom one, or somewhere near it) Window_Placement > Right Click, Modify.

Now you need to get a Hex editor and find out how to change that around. I'm not exactly sure if this is right, but it seems like it should be.

Hopefully it helps... I'm really paranoid about editing the registry, I did it once and ended up having to reinstall Windows, so I won't try it out myself.
