Anybody have a recommendation on a wireless router/switch/access point.

I picked up a Linksys BEFW11S4 but have been having a bear of a time trying to get the damned thing to work. I'm at the point where I'm ready to bring it back and exchange it for a new one.

Rather than getting another Linksys, I'm not opposed to trying another brand.

Anyone have any experience with similar gear from SMC, Netgear, D-Link, Siemens, Belkin, etc?

I also picked up a Linksys WPC11 card for my laptop, but haven't heard great things about it compared to some of the other 802.11b cards.

Thanks,

-Tacks

We have had nothing but great luck with the Linksys routers we've bought. Once they are setup correctly on the pc end, everything is smooth as silk. I think if the setup as far as DNS/DHCP/etc isn't done correctly, you'll probably have trouble with any brand you choose.... having said that, I have new roomates at home now and finally have to set down and configure the Linksys correctly so I can add their computer to the dsl connections.

I've got the Sitecom 802.11b in my laptop and one in the back of my desktop in a pci adapter, found them very good and were very cheap in the winter sales (complete setup for £100).
I'd be lost without it, 42metres rang means sitting in the garden with a beer and the pc, browsing will be what I'll be doing this summer!

Reminds me of an article I read recently, about employees surrepticiously adding their own wireless access, and creating potential security problems in the process. Since those transmissions can be intercepted much like cell phone signals, someone in an office next door could potentially collect info at will.

It doesn't have anything to do with this exactly, I just thought it was an interesting article. smile

In "theory" it should be a dynamic address. But its not picking up the dns. I've tried all of the known ip/mac addresses. It might just be a bum router.

what OS are you trying to set it up on? Could be that it is trying to setup its own DHCP server

I've got a D-Link 714 gateway/wap and it works great. I've got it working with an iMac (ethernet), an iBook using an Airport card, a Win98 computer (ethernet) and Linux (ethernet). All three work great with it. I was actually more worried about getting the iBook with the Aiport card working with it, but it worked right out of the box with no configuration necessary.

Fixed my problem.

Two words...

SMC Rulez!

Took me less than 10 minutes (manual reading included) to get the SMC router up, running and configed.
