I use ps 7 for almost every graphic I do, but I don't do buttons, and I'd like to start. So I came here, amd a lot talk about firewoks. Should I use this instead? And why? Does it have something to do with vector drawing?

I'm not sure why there is so much talk about Fireworks, but Photoshop is more than enough for what you need to do, including creating buttons. If I were you, I would stick with PS7.

Fireworks MX is very very cool but I'm a Photoshop 7 phreak. I have the Macromedia MX Suite and I will be using it but I've spent so much time in PS that it's hard to put time into starting over on another app.

Personally I prefer PSP7... It's kinda like a more compact version of PS7, and it has all the options I'd ever need to use readily available. But in the long run, I would say PS7 is better.

As for Fireworks... I don't really like it; I'd stick with PS7.

IMO, I like Fireworks MUCH better than Photoshop. I find it easier to use, and the results to be much better. But that is just my opinion and it will probably upset some of you photoshop junkies. wink

When I used to have a Windows machine I used Paint Shop Pro myself and loved it. It was a great program for those mid-level graphic artists, and it was a bargain. Unfortunately they only support the Windows platform, and when I moved to the Mac platform I had to go with either Fireworks or PhotoShop (chose Photoshop).

I'm no image expert, but I do have Photoshop 7 (I had 5 for the longest time and never used it, used fireworks) and I'm loving lots of the features. Try the demo of each. Keep the one you like. smile

Good call, I forgot about The Gimp. I actually still have it installed on my Linux box, but haven't used it since getting Photoshop. I would highly recommend The Gimp if you're using a flavor of Linux or if you're willing to install some add-on software you can use it in OS X.

They have a decent version of the Gimp for Windows. Download the two zips, unzip, click setup. What can be easier? It runs pretty well on my machine.

I AM using the newest version of The Gimp. It works fine on my KDE 2 box but it crashes instantly on my KDE 3 box. It does work on gnome though...
