I highly recommend you read up on regular expressions & mod_rewrite documentation before you attempt to do this!

In other words know what you are doing. A simple syntactical error will stop your site from being accessed by your users.

This is used for servers running Apache only. This can be done within your httpd.conf file as well. In fact performance wise individual rewrites work better there. I jusut have not figured out how to do a single rewrite with my list yet which is preferable when done in .htaccess

There is a minimal performance hit in CPU usage but the bandwidth saved from these pests should outweigh this.

Ok lets see if this makes sense...

In using:

RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} ^Wolf [OR]

The "^" (carrot) will always match the beginning of the search string. This will have the rule match any UA that starts with "Wolf". However, the real UA that you want to catch here starts with "EmailWolf", which will not get caught with the above pattern.

I hope that made sense...

Also realize that some of these are going to be case sensative (I never said this was going to be easy) thus will require the designation of [NC] for some instances.

The more I read the more I am realizing that we can do so much more with .htaccess in terms of security and access.
