Somebody got theirs apparently from one of those places online where you can get the diploma for $20 plus shipping tipsy

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Apple will run out of iMacs before their next model will be ready to ship, by several weeks to a month or more:
You can't make this up tipsy
Sucks for them, missing back to school is bound to hurt. Will also hurt their resellers that still have an inventory of current iMac's. A lot of people are likely to hold off on buying one knowing that something bigger and better is just around the corner.
Not much word about what the new form factor will be. Some rumours are that it will be an LCD mounted in a rectangular box. Bluetooth mouse and keyboard. If so, makes me wonder whether or not it could be considered somewhat a portable desktop. The current iMacs have a pretty heavy base, especially the 20" to counter the weight of the lcd panel.
Lots of mac users would also love to see a headless mac (ala Cube), but I don't think that is going to happen.
With the delay, you have to think a lower powered G5. I think the public will be disappointed if it is still a G4.
I find it odd that a business in business that long would do such a poor job of predicting sales and demand. Cutting the numbers that close wasn't very smart when they're your bread and butter for back-to-school sales.
Apple is pushing iBooks and PowerBooks for school sales. Or so I read. No iMac for a couple months is going to hurt, but at least they've got some fallback products. I really do wonder what the new ones are going to look like though... their inventory manager may have been a flunkie, but their system designers... well... they may be potheads, but they're no slackers! wink
Some might speculate that if they managed to cram a G5 in there, that supply issues related to IBM might be to blame. They had some delays on their xserve blades, as well as their power macs. Maybe a lower-power 90nm PPC970 running at 1.6 or 1.8gHz. Wonder if they are going to use a liquid cooling system like in their newer G5 (although that could be considered a pro-feature).
Personally, I'm not in a rush to buy a new one, both my iLamp and Powerbook have held up with my demands/needs.
It's official...the new iMac will be sporting a G5 laugh
Ok, so maybe I'll consider maybe buying one. Actually, I'll probably wait for it to show up in a PowerBook, and replace my current PB.
Did your current powerbook get caught in the flaming battery incident?
No, mine is 12". tipsy
SO I guess if I did catch on fire, I'm not eligible for the recall.
Granted it wasn't without its problems. When I first got it, I had a battery that wouldn't hold a charge that needed replacing. The aluminum powerbooks have been notorious for running hot (granted so does my dell, but it rarely leaves its dock).
I prefer the look of the 2nd gen iMac (yes the one that looks like a lamp).
But there is a big performance difference between this and a 800mHz G4
This one would be real nice with a wall mount.
i hate macs... they make my life as a win32 enterprise developer sooooo complicated. And the more innovative they are, the more i hate 'em frown
does anybody understand this:
Move your stuff to an iMac G5 in four easy steps using the new Mac OS X Setup Assistant.
is Mac OS X a brand new OS platform for this machine, or an existing OS thats already been around?
MacOSX has been around for years; basically it's a revamped MacOS on a Debian Linux system... Quite nice if you get a chance to mess with it...
You can even enable root on the system wink
I thought it was more of a collision between NeXT and FreeBSD. Vastly different than the old (classic) MacOS. It's a unix kernel. Very stable/solid. The first version of OS X was a bit rough around the edges, but Jaguar (10.2) and Panther (10.3) are verrrry nice. The next, major release version (Tiger - 10.4) is expected early 2005. There is a lot to love about OS X
Actually, I believe that official documentation label the underlying system as Debian from last I read.
I will agree that It's totally differant than the old MacOS (I can't stand it); the new system has a great deal of improvements that wowed even myself wink ...
I had to play with the first version and Jaguar at Adobe, I hadn't gotten my mits on Panther though..
But I will definately agree with you that they actually spent some time on it for once wink
It might just be me...but it seems that the quality of Dells have deteriorated year after year. It's almost as if they continue to use the least expensive components to reduce their costs, thereby allowing them to offer a value price relative to other brands. Everyone in my group has had their hard drive crash within 2 years, not to mention other issues.
Heres a list of issues:
Keyboard: had to have it replaced twice due to keys poping off; they refuse to let you purchase the scissor hinge for $0.25, instead you have to have it completley replaced for $300. Best part is, my current keyboard needs replaced again!
Mouse: I sent my laptop in for the keyboard to be replaced, had no issue with the mouse prior; as soon as i got it back BOTH the trackpad and "eraser" mouse stopped working (it's not an issue with the OS as it's been re-formatted a good 8 times since then). I'm now using an external trackball.
Service: I sent my laptop in for repairs, waited about a month for servicing; heard nothing. Called in and got some guy who couldn't even speak english (no it wasn't the spanish line, they told their outsourcer (solectron) that they wanted to have support in PAkistan so that they could have the "cheapest possible support)... The guy couldn't find my system; in fact he demanded it had already been returned to me! Turns out after half an hour of me screaming at him he was giving me the delivery date of the box to ship my laptop to them (note, I told him that 3 times, i just had to pound it into his head for half an hour)... He then "magically" realised this and after another 45 minutes located the system (it failed a buttload of internal tests at that).
I have more issues with them too smirk... All in all, never buy a dell.
We've had a lot of mysterious mouse/touchpad problems as well. Either touchpads that act eratically, or where the pointer wanders aimlessly around the screen all by itself, or when the eraser stops working all together.
I use a Dell at work because I have to. Macs at home because I choose to (fair balance - my 12" Al PBook came with a lemon battery, no problems since)
My dell notebook hasn't given me any problems (once I replaced the screen they sent me smash ), tho my old one had loads of problems with the harddrive after a couple years.
