If you wanna test out a provider, just call their tech support, like this...
once at 8am once at 10am once at 11am once at 12pm once at 1pm once at 3pm once at 6pm once at 9pm once at 11pm once at 1am
if they answer in a timely manner, then you've found a good host. Just see if the phone rings or if it brings you into a voicemail or messaging service of some sort. Just make up some questions to ask them, while some may say.. man you are increasing their call load and not letting them help someone else, well.. it's my money and i'm not gonna flush it down the tube on a hosting company that isn't worth a ....

Sometimes that is not enough. I had no problem getting hispeed.net 'tech' support on the phone. I just had a problem with them doing anything after that.

www.cwihosting.com Slightly more than liquidweb, ($30 a month).. but they're very reliable, live up to everything they say, and their online control panel stuff is very easy to use.. I've been with them around 6 months now and I have to say I'm very happy with their service and with their tech support (and yes, we've called them at all hours of the day and night).. Oh, and feel free to say I referred you if you sign up, (I get $20 :)) [ February 06, 2001: Message edited by: Lucia ]

we use addr for the hosting of the main core pages @ oneminuteleft.com , i dunno who mick is using too host omlmail.com and we are allways having to buy a different server for our roms, many of our "non-serious" webmasters just use nbcI, but our dedicated server in the next while will replace the rom file servers.
1 other note, NEVER use addr, we are stuck with em till august and they SUCK!

At some point I'd definitely like to be on a dedicated server, but right now CWI is suiting us fine, just when the point comes that we need a lot more space, in a year or so, then we'll have to move to dedicated.. Here's hoping I'm rich enough to afford it by then..

I've never signed up for a year plan to save a few bucks... that way I can switch if a host throws a bunch of problems my way. Although, after 3 years.. I've never had to change.. but I'm always on the lookout for something better.

As simple as this sounds it really works. I just switched to another host and I wish I had done this. From Midnight till 6 in the morning everything is down. Don't know what they are doing, but now i've got to move again. Synx are you looking for the most features, or the most bang for the buck ? [ February 11, 2001: Message edited by: SwishY ]

I've said it before and I'll say it again, CWI is a really great host. $30 a month, they support everything, their tech support is always there, 1200Mb space, and a 100% uptime guarantee (if your site is down for more than 20 minutes, and you report it to them, they give back half the month's hosting cost, or give you another half month on account.)

CWI Hosting is GARBAGE. They gave me a full month of ****ty service and have not replied to my e-mails to billing or the CEO to request a refund. I was plagued with 29 days of services failing, and several downtimes in the first few DAYS of hosting (They have a 100% uptime gaurentee, f-ing propeganda, they were up for maybe 80%, which is intolerable). Lets see, the website stat program doesn't update on any apparent schedual...averages about once every 4 days, they BROKE their compiler, and when I TOLD them how to fix it they replied with "We don't see any errors on our end that would cause this problem" well I program for a living and when the libraries fail, it's their fault. (they didn't even TRY to compile a program to reproduce the errors I was getting - they probably don't know how to compile in the first place). Not only that, but their system fails to parse SSI when it gets loaded, never had that problem anywhere else, CGI failed for the 3 days before I finally called it quits, (for these as well the support message was always "We don't see anything wrong on our end" well, news for them is that when someone leaves a website running and doesn't update it for two days, during which SSI and CGI fail repeatedly, it's THEIR problem). Their server also went down so many times it makes me sick (they keep their own site www.cwihosting.com on a cobalt RaQ which I only saw crash once the whole time, but the server I was on was flakey as hell), and they contest EVERY downtime trying to blame it on routers and anything else that will get them out of refunding money (again, I'm not stupid, a simple tracert revealed every time that there was no router problem). Now maybe Lucia got lucky and got on a different server, but I had a months worth of contats with their technical staff which proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that this company doesn't know how to run a server, and is most likely one or two people who installed some servers but don't know how to maintain them. Their Tech Support replies to inquiries via the support system fairly quickly, but for any actual "technical" problems they are useless, and their phone line is rarely answered, and when it is they direct you to the support form. Current status for me is waiting for a reply to my refund request, and they will probably contest it and rob me of a full years payment in advance for a ****ty months service. I have moved to CQHost.com (they run RaQ's) and am having no problems, no downtime, and it's a VERY fast server. Their rates aren't as good as LiquidWeb (that's the best place I've seen, and I have looked everywhere having been going from host to host for 5 years no), so try LiquidWeb first. 500 megs is normally plenty, and what you really want is that 30gig transfer a month, very generous (my CQHost gives 15 gigs). If you want FULL details of ALL the problems at CWI Hosting, drop me an e-mail and I can elaborate, but right now I'm waiting for that refund reply and if it doesn't come soon and they continue to ignore my e-mail and not answer their phones I'll be reporting them to the Better Business Bureau. Again, check out LiquidWeb (link at the top from the original thread poster), and you can also check out CQHost.com and compare offers, but I do think LiquidWeb looks better, and know a few sites that are hosted there as well (dragonseek.com as one). I don't know about you but CWIhosting is working fine for me . I transferred my whole UBB in less than a day then got it up the same day I got my static IP. I had no problems except the cpanel association between CWI & UBB. For $32 bucks a month ($12 my share), you just can't beat it. Well we all have different opinions. They probably just didn't like you heh j/k

Well whatever the case may be, you should certainly be careful with them, because I saw their unprofessional and unorganized side for a full month, and it wasn't pretty.

Well so far so good. I just need to transfer my domain and then I'm all set. You should see my old host, they shut down my whole UBB without notice making me think that someone is screwing around with my files. Then it came out to be the server admins doing it... CWI's email support is pretty quick if you use the icommunicate service. The email method takes about a day though which isn't really that bad.

Yes, their e-mail replies were fast when it didn't involve asking for a refund. I've gone a week with nothing now, and they have left my account up after I asked them to shut it down, god knows if they will try to use that against me saying "technically my site was taking space on their server after the 30day money back gaurentee time", but I wouldn't be surprised. But watch out, if a service fails like an apache handler or your CGI entirely, they won't take responsibility.
