If you have more than 500 people and a UNIX system, I suggest you to get Bahamut (like there is in DALnet). If you have less users and/or Windows, maybe Unreal is a good option. For Services (like ChanServ, NickServ, etc), get SirvNET for UNIX and LakeServ/AlterServ for Windows. They're all free.

You can make IRC chat rooms by using a IRC client like mIRC .

Ack, don't run any IRCd on windows, let alone Unreal, it was compiled to Win32 but the gui sucks and has flaws, its best used for *nix applications with ircservices....
Unreal is by far one of the better IRCd's..
As a general rule if you want a good stable network, build it off a *nix base, windows and stability shouldn't be used in the same sentance....

I have to agree with that. Don't expect for a good uptime in any Windows IRCd.

Actually Unreal 3.1.1 for Win9x works just fine. Only problems I've had with it are caused by my connection. i.e., dynamic ip and so on.. if your connection is good enough, use Unreal.. or you can use the KIRENet hosting service (paid). They have a service especially for IRC servers. Right here . Last service offered on that page. [ July 05, 2001 06:57 PM: Message edited by: The Donut ]

You might upgrade your Win32 version of Unreal to 3.1.2 for looks, but its just a hotfix for *nix servers for libc2.2.2 compliance on RedHat 7.1 servers, none of the actuall Win32 code was changed. You might consider going for a *nix based IRCd, it will allow you to use encrypted Yline, Oline and Restart and die passes, just incase your ircd.conf is compromised...
