I'm going to buy a new pc and am wondering if I could use my old pc for hosting my website and UBB. I have a Cyrix 187Mhz with 128MB RAM, my websites do not need to process huge amounts of hits (yet).

Also another question is: what software is best to use for php hosting?

Thanks in advance

Quix

Forgot to say:
I'm running Win98 on it, so probably I'd have to use UBB 5... (or can I use a newer version?)

DO NOT serve a public website from Win98. It is FAR too insecure and inadequate. If you're just doing localhost testing, great, Win98 is almost workable in that situation. But for a live production site that is accessible to the public it just won't work. Unless you've got your own personal T3 or better connection, serving from your own computer is really not worthwhile anyway because of the crappy bandwidth.

Well, bandwidth is not the biggest problem, because of my LAN connection. It's just for serving one or two small websites...

What OS is better win98 for serving? (one that has a decent "user-friendlyness" to it)

Windows 2000 Pro is the very least you should have. Win2k Server would be better. Both still have the similar feel of 9X but are built with things like serving in mind.

Hmm.... I don't think my Cyrix187 Mhz can handle Windows 2000.

Is there an alternative?

I downloaded a Linux serving package and I'm going to see if that works. They say it can run on a Pentium 90, so then it sure can run on my Cyrix 187 with 128MB RAM...

Hope it works cool
