I recently purchased a ubb.Classic, and am currently hosted by RTech Solutions under their "Value" plan ($7/month for 1 year.) I noticed Powweb\'s $7.77/month plan recently, and am thinking of switching to them. Do you think that switching to Powweb would be worth the slight price increase, and has anyone had any experience running a ubb.Classic there? Thanks in advance.

no experiance with either cept that I got a popup ad from powweb...automaticly means they are on my black list... Here are traceroutes to both...

As you'll see there is a huge difference between ping times, this is somewhat misleading however since powweb is in LA while Rtech seems to be in NY (at least the east coast) and I am outside NYC...

Please explain the significance between the ping times, and which you would rate higher based upon them (if that is possible.) I live on the East coast, BTW, if that makes any difference.

Regarding Powweb's ads, they may have a popup, but they don't require any on your site.

the lower the ping time the faster the site will seem. It doesn't measure bandwidth per se, but mostly distance. or the number of hops it has to take to get to the destination server (and then back)

The more hops, the longer it takes to get to you. (generaly speaking)

Some hops can take much longer than others...

In the obove trace, you see where it jumps from 50ms to 109ms. That is a slow hop and is adding drasticly to the ping time. It could also just be the cross country hop and be a long distance to travel. Either way, you'd really want to get on a site like http://taex001.tamu.edu/cgi-bin/traceroute or one of the others listed at: http://www.traceroute.org/#USA to get a bettwe idea of response times..Generaly I'd say that under 100ms is good..the lower the better.

You'll notice the bigger the ISP the lower the ping times because they are able to get bigger pipes closer to the "core" of the internet, therefor saving hops...

So factoring the ping time et al, do you think my current host is better than Powweb?

Current Host:
100 MB
5 GB Bandwidth

Powweb:
200 MB
16 GB Bandwidth

confused

I think that if you are within the bandwidth req, within the storage limit, and have no other issues (read problems) with your current host, and you are still in a contract (that i'd assume you've already paid for) that there is no reason to leave....

Measuring a ping or running a trace route has nothing to do with the provider. The route taken to get to the web server is different for everyone that does it and is not under the control of the provider. Trace routes run from one end of the overall route are virtually meaningless. You mentioned a single bad hop? what could that possibly have to do with the hosting company unless it was within their private network and would have an effect on latency for their customers?

If you want a good measure of the performance look at sites that are running there. If they have a 30 day money back guearantee then grab a site and copy your code to it and hammer on it for awhile.

Please remember one thing though, at 7 dollars a month for a site that will allow a UBB of any size at all consider yourself lucky.

Forget the ping time...it looks like POW offers a lot more for the money.

I used powweb for my site, http://www.the-kd.com
They are rarely ever down, and if they are it's for a matter of minutes while they upgrade their servers (which they've done a couple times this year, providing customers with more bandwidth and space, for free). Their prices can't be beat, and neither can their support. I'd suggest you chose Powweb for your host.

D'oh! I want to switch to Powweb, but I guess I can't do so after reading my current host's cancellation policy:

8. "CANCELLATION" Requests
This agreement will commence upon the ACCOUNT HOLDER's acceptance of it and continue on a month-to-month basis.

a. For ACCOUNT HOLDERS that pay on a MONTHLY basis ONLY - "CANCELLATION" requests for RTECH SOLUTIONS, INC. accounts must be sent to [email protected] and received by RTech Solutions, before the 15th of each month, in order to be processed by the end of the same month.

b. For ACCOUNT HOLDERS that pay on a NON-MONTHLY basis (3 and 12 months) - "CANCELLATION" requests for RTECH SOLUTIONS, INC. accounts must be sent to [email protected] and received by RTech Solutions, 15 days before the account's anniversary date, in order to be processed before anniversary date. This will prevent an automatic renewal and charge.

c. All RTECH SOLUTIONS, INC. accounts must be paid in full before the transaction will be considered complete.

d. Cancellations after the first 30 days of account activation will NOT generate ANY refund.

I bought a year-long term back in March, so I guess if I cancel now I get no refund. eek frown I bet I'm misinterpreting them, though. cool

Never mind that. I can get out of my RTS term with a decent refund.

my point is/was that if you are within a lesser plan, how much better a larger one is comes down to service and response time...
